"[Y/N], can we borrow you for a moment?"
I followed the triplets into the hall, readjusting the jacket of my outfit. The only downside of the uniform change — is the jacket. Lady Dimitrescu said I didn't have to wear it, but the last time I was around one of them without the jacket on, Cassandra wouldn't talk to me until I put it on. She refused to look at me until I put it on too.
"Is everything alright, my ladies?"
"We just need you to make sure the maids are on their best behavior tomorrow," They stated with a hint of nervousness. "Mother Miranda is coming by tomorrow, so mother's going to be on edge, we don't want the new ones getting themselves killed. Not when they just arrived, at least."
"Don't worry, I'll make sure everything is perfect."
Daniela and Bela left soon after that, but Cassandra stayed. Once her sisters were far enough away, she pulled me in for a hug and purred, nuzzling into my neck when I returned the hug. I sighed happily when my back connected with the wall, the freezing temperature of her body soothing the wave of heat that washed over me.
That was the one side effect of the cadou that was negative — well, it used to be. Before I was close to Cassandra, the waves of heat would encumber me. When the heat ebbed away, Cassandra slowly pulled back and cupped my cheeks, sending me a small smile.
"The air got hotter," She whispered while brushing her thumb over my cheek. "Yell for me if it happens again."
"I know the drill," I laughed, playfully shoving her hands away. "Thank you, they're painful without you."
"I remember... You hated that I saw you like that, but I'm glad I did. I'm glad we found a way to ease your pain."
I giggled and gently shoved her away, muttering about how I needed to get back to work. Cassandra laughed before doing something that shocked us both. She kissed my cheek. We stared at each other — wide-eyed — before she turned into her swarm and left. I lifted a hand to the cheek she kissed, staring in the direction her swarm went.
Once I snapped out of the trance I was in, I returned to the library and arranging the books, choosing to distract myself rather than dwell on what happened. We could discuss it later — if she even wanted to talk about it. She never was the best at admitting her feelings. Usually, she'd get angry and lash out — only accidentally hurting me four times.
Each time, she didn't leave my side until I was fully healed. I wasn't even allowed to bathe on my own — Cassandra insisted on helping with that too, which resulted in us both being extremely flustered. The sound of someone clearing their throat pulled me out of my thoughts, making me send a smile to Hunter once I saw it was her.
"Hey Hunter, do you need something?"
"Your father asked me to keep an eye on your vitals — namely your body temperature-."
"I'm fine," I promised her before returning to my work. "I have a system for that now — have for a while."
"I'll let him know then," She smiled before glancing back at Isa, leaning closer to me after making sure they weren't paying attention. "...Did lady Daniela know the little liege in their past life?"
"'Little liege'?" I laughed quietly before my smile turned bittersweet. "They were in love... But the life of a demigod..."
"Is very deadly," Hunter continued with a frown. "I heard stories from mother but... I didn't want them to be true. To think the little liege finally found someone, just for the war to take them away like that..."
"All true. Dani never got over it — Don't tell Isa. Their soul is the same as before, they'll feel guilty that they died and left her alone and hurting for so long."
"...Yeah, that sounds like them."
Dinner
After dinner ended, I let Hunter and Isa clean up — knowing if anyone was going to be competent, it would be those two. I took a deep breath as I made my way to the armory, knowing Cassandra would go there until her mother made her go to bed. As I entered the space, I noticed her sorting the weapons meticulously — the same way she instructed me just a few days ago.
I quietly made my way over to her, making sure to stay a few feet back when I cleared my throat just in case. She didn't jump like normal — instead, she motioned me over and halted in her sorting, sending a glance my way when I didn't move immediately. I squeaked and moved over to her, taking the seat next to her when she patted the empty space.
"About earlier..." She started softly, fidgeting with her gloves. "Let's just pretend it never happened, okay? Everyone's gotten so... strict? Yeah, I guess that's the word... Strict about feelings — especially for maids — after Isa's death."
"What are you-?"
"I-It was a heat of the moment thing! I-I was just s-saying if... if there were feelings, we wouldn't be able to do anything about them."
"My lady, as far as everyone is concerned, you just helped my body temperature cool down like you normally do. No one else knows."
"Good," She whispered and gently took my hand in hers. "I don't know what I'd do without you... I can't lose you the way we lost Isa all those years ago... It would break me."
"Th-This sounds like a l-love confession," I muttered and tried to suppress the heat that rushed to my cheeks.
"You're heating up again."
"H-how could I n-not?! You and your sisters have such a way with words."
"Come here," Cassandra nearly pouted as she pulled me onto her lap, burying her face in my neck shortly after. "You need to cool down."
'You're causing the opposite to happen!' I wanted to whine, melting into her arms instead. 'Damn you... If it wasn't for you, I would've left long ago.'
"You're still very warm."
"I'm trying," I scoffed with a chuckle, tightening my grip on her slightly. "...Can you stay in my room tonight?"
Cassandra shifted slightly and pulled away from my neck, making me glance away — avoiding her gaze. "Is something wrong?"
"I-I just... I don't want to be alone tonight... I don't know where this feeling came from..."
'You don't?! You wound me~.'
