'You don't?! You wound me~.'

I tensed at the sultry voice, letting out a soft hiss when Cassandra pulled me even closer as the temperature in the room dropped. Dark grey mist curled around a porcelain leg as it appeared out of seemingly nowhere. My gaze slowly trailed up the leg, biting back a growl when fabric covered the rest of the body the leg belonged to.

The silk dress — although long — didn't cover much when the being walked. When my eyes finally landed on her face, it took a lot of energy to not whine. Black hair framed her porcelain face, and her midnight purple eyes shimmered upon locking with mine. The goddess was next to me in an instant, metal finger guards gripping my jaw and forcing me to maintain eye contact with her.

"Two children of the night..." Her sultry voice made me melt into her hand. "...Doomed to never love... Yet you found love in each other."

"Wait, what was that part about being doomed?"

"Don't worry, godling. Just know that Aphrodite isn't the only god that has a stake in this."

"Gods are placing bets on our emotions?" Cassandra growled against my neck, making me tighten my grip on her to prevent her from attacking. "How about I—."

She froze when she saw the goddess — Nyx — in all her glory. Porcelain skin, midnight purple eyes that seemed endless, hair to contrast her skin — hell, even the hint of fangs I could see when she talked. Or in this case, grins menacingly. Not many beings could cause such a need to be protected by someone, but Nyx was a different being.

She was a primordial goddess — one of the oldest beings — it would be more of a shock if her presence didn't silence someone. The thing that snapped me out of my trance was Nyx separating me and Cassandra. Before I had the chance to question her, however, the door opened to reveal lady Dimitrescu. Her gaze narrowed at the goddess until she released me, an innocent giggle leaving Nyx.

"Just the woman I was hoping to see!" Nyx beamed and walked passed me. "I'm here to do the yearly check-in, sadly, the godling's parents are very busy and couldn't be here in person."

"Then come with me," Lady Dimitrescu said after a moment of silence — her eyes roaming over the goddess. "I have a lot of things to say."

"All good, I hope," I chuckled nervously as they left, sighing in relief when Cassandra hugged me from behind. "That was close."

"Mhm... I should go anyway. See you tomorrow."

"See ya."

Morning

I let out a sigh of annoyance as a maid raced passed me — a terrified scream leaving her in the process. Sleep had evaded me last night, barely allowing me an hour of sleep. Isa poked their head out of the room they were cleaning, hazel eyes fluttering over to me and softening the moment they recognize the exhaustion on my face.

"Take a break," They whispered after walking over to me, sending me a warm smile. "Hunter or I will get you if things escalate. Lady Cassandra just seems to enjoy chasing that maid, for some reason."

'Yeah, because that maid has feelings for me,' I internally sighed before ruffling their hair. "I've been doing this for—."

"Pleeaasse?"
