Final part

With Kiriko no longer around, you found it much easier to throw away any and all mercy when dealing with the soldiers of Talon. There was a Talon base located somewhere in Japan, that much you knew, but it had been hard to pinpoint where exactly. You would follow one soldier around for the day, then execute him if he gave you nothing useful to work off of. If one did give you a new lead, you would execute them and follow on to the next who seemed closely linked to your previous target.
For the most part you worked on taking them on 1v1, a much different approach than to taking on a group at a time of the Hashimoto. But then again, you were now just one person, and the Talon soldiers proved a bit more challenging than the Hashimoto thugs. There were, however, moments when you would find yourself going against multiple soldiers at a time. Sometimes you'd walk away with a minor injury, but most of the time you could handle it just fine. Fighting more than one did mean that cleanup was harder though. You were leaving a bit of a trail of sorts of beheaded Talon members. Still, that did not make it any less startling when someone decided to step in before you.
"I thought I might find you in this area." The voice was easily recognizable, and even if part of you was relieved to hear it, you primarily dreaded it.
"You better be here by coincidence." You hadn't turned to face her, instead focusing on the blades in your hands that were stained with the blood of the soldiers lying lifeless on the ground. It didn't bother you at first, but now the decoration was glaring.
"I tracked you down. I didn't think you'd go straight for Talon by yourself so I had to make sure. Now that I see that's exactly what you're doing, I can't let you go on alone."
"I told you to stay out of my business. Did I not? What'd I tell you would happen if you got in my way again?" You lowered the blades to your sides when you turned to finally look Kiriko in the face. Internally, you winced at the quick glance she made at the blood on your weapons and clothing. She could tell that most of it, if any at all, didn't belong to you.
"I don't want to fight you," You cut her off before she continued any further.
"Then go home." With one sword now raised and pointed towards her as a threat, you watched her eyes narrow, a flash of conflicted determination in her features.
"No." She spoke slowly and carefully as you watched her reach for her kunai, one positioned in each hand as her stance shifted, ready to defend.
Judging by the way she jumped when you lunged toward her, she didn't think you would actually attack her. Still, she didn't hesitate in blocking your first strike with her knives crossed before her. You didn't want to hurt her, so your aggression was mainly to scare her off and give her the illusion that you would kill her if she didn't retreat.
The force from your first attack was enough to push Kiriko back a couple of steps, but that allowed her time to regroup herself for your next strike. The weight of your swords were much heavier when compared to her kunai, so while she could block the blow it would end up knocking her weapon down. However, the weight of your weapons meant it took longer to swing, allowing her time to reposition for the next block. She clearly was not acting on the offensive, maybe because she was scared of wounding you or maybe because your aggression towards her was simply that off-putting that she didn't feel comfortable switching the roles. That didn't stop her from trying to at least partially disarm you.
While you were attacking with one blade at a time, Kiriko took advantage of it. As you swung your blade down in the direction of her chest, she shoved her knives out in front of her, the weapons crossing and catching your sword at its base before it could hit her. In that position, it made it easy for her to turn and twist the weapon out of your hand and duck away from your second incoming sword. She got up quicker than you could turn your body back towards her, giving her the chance to land a kick to your ribs and push you away from herself and your other blade on the ground.
The pain only lasted briefly, it wouldn't even leave a bruise. She was holding back against you, maybe even more so than she would when you two would spar together to get used to the other's fighting style. But, she also knew you weren't thinking clearly, you were visibly angry and she was sure it wasn't anger toward her.
You stayed a few steps away from her to catch your ground again, slowly beginning to circle her with both hands now on your remaining sword. She watched you closely with her weapons raised but didn't dare to swing at you first. For some reason, her defiance only spurred you on, gritting your teeth and tightening your grip on your blade as you rushed towards her.
Kiriko tensed, digging her heels into the ground as you came in for your first blow. She knocked your blade down with her right knife, covering her face and pushing your second strike to the side with her left. Despite holding her ground, your aggression drove her back one step at a time, with nearly every blow. She decided to try and remove your second weapon from your grip, going for the same tactic as before. You had been able to see her strategy since she had already used it once, not swinging the blade so close to her so she couldn't quite reach the base of your sword. Instead, her kunai crossed in the middle of your weapon.
Holding with two hands now meant that you were able to push back against her enough that she physically could not turn to the offensive. She eyed your blade carefully while your gaze never left her irises, your eyes narrowed dangerously with your jaw locked shut in a tight grip as you put all your strength behind pushing against Kiriko's knives. There was a quiet creak from one of the weapons before the force between both of you caused the sword to snap with an ear-piercing sound. It startled Kiriko far more as you had been planning for the steel to give in. Her guard was down, so you could knock her balance out from under and follow it with a strong blow to her chest.
As soon as the girl yelped and tripped backward, you lunged forth, knocking one of her weapons from her hand and snagging the other for yourself. You dropped on top of her, your weight keeping her down as well as the shock, her knife in your hand being held against her throat. She seemed panicked with her eyes wide, but there was still a softness in her features because she knew you wouldn't end it. You were both gasping for breath, you more so, as you began to slowly calm down. The adrenaline of the fight was washing away quickly and taking the blinding rage away with it as you were now forced to properly look into Kiriko's eyes beneath you.
She could clearly see deep regret and guilt in your eyes as you lessened your hold on the weapon against her jugular. It was enough that she was able to reach up and willingly take the weapon from you, setting it off to the side. You didn't seem to register it, a scowl returning to your face when she tried to ask you what was wrong. Really, what was wrong.
"I told you to stay the hell out of my way!" You snapped, feeling a burn start to fester in your throat and in your eyes. Empathy showed greatly in Kiriko's eyes as she tried to reach you, her hands settling on your forearms gently when you moved your hands to grip the collar of her top.
"You can't do this by yourself, I don't know what you're fighting for but you'll die if you do it alone." Her voice was steady and soft in trying to soothe you as much as possible. It didn't work like she had hoped it to.
"They took everything from me! I will not let them take you too!" The burning in your throat was still there, but the sensation in your eyes was soothed by the warmth traveling down your cheeks as you finally broke completely in front of Kiriko. Though you had not told her anything of your past, she knew how personal the matter was to you. She had a bunch of what happened, but she still wouldn't understand the details. Still, hearing you finally say it caused a deep pain in her chest for you. You didn't say anything else as you got off of the girl, turning to retrieve your one sword that was still intact.
"They'll take you too. Failing to them won't bring you any satisfaction and it won't make anything better. Do you want them to win?" Her words didn't have any sting behind them as she got up from the ground. You didn't take offense to the fact she didn't believe you could take them. You weren't even sure if you could take them, but what mattered is that you were trying, and judging by the dead Talon soldiers a mere thirty feet away, you were at least doing something. You hadn't stopped to think that they could kill you and everything you'd done would be for nothing.
"I meant what I said, Kiriko. I don't want your help." You muttered after sheathing your weapon and walking away from her. There wasn't any more she could do, and in the moment she couldn't think of anything to say that would make you turn around. All she could do was hope that fox spirit would look after you without her beside you.
