The public gym they were in had surprisingly been empty even though different play areas for other sports were filled. Weirdly enough, not many people seemed to want to play volleyball on a Friday afternoon after classes were over. However, there were two other strangers practising their serves or spikes beside them.
Nevertheless, Arūna had assumed others were more focused on their studies than playing hot potato for an hour or two. Lucky for her, Oikawa had spared his study sessions just for this promise.
Arūna served the volleyball she brought to the floor before quickly catching it after it bounced back.
- So... What's step one to this?
Though, Oikawa hadn't answered.
While staring at Arūna, he felt almost amazed or even... repulsed.
Oikawa swore he'd counted more than ten on Arūna's arms & yet she was moving as if they'd hurt like nothing. The biggest bruises he could see were on her forearms & they seemed like they'd ache the most if she were to press down on them. They were a deep, dark purple & slightly bluish colour.
Oikawa could feel his forearms hurt just by staring at Arūna's arms.
- ...Are you okay? - Oikawa asked hesitantly.
- Yes? Why do you ask?
He pointed at the bruises:
- Your... Your arms—
Arūna looked down at her forearms with her usual expressionless expression.
- Oh, don't worry about that. I get bruised all the time. It's nothing, really. Anyway, we should get started.
- Okay... - Oikawa hesitantly continued. - Do you remember the types of sets I told you about when we were walking here? Let's try the first few since they're easier to pull off.
- You mean the slow, four and five sets?
- Correct! - he happily beamed. - You're so good at this, Rūna'chan.
- It's not my first time playing setter, y'know...
- Let's start with the slow sets! It'll be a good warm-up for you. Here, let me show you.
Arūna tossed Oikawa the ball before she headed away from the net, creating a long distance. The girl gave Oikawa a quick thumbs up & he nodded.
- Carefully watch the ball! - Oikawa exclaimed as he got ready. Arūna nodded & gazed at Oikawa's form. She took two large steps back before running & jumping.
The ball was already in her palm before getting slammed towards the ground opposite Arūna.
The girl saw how slow that set was, but the spike happened all in one fast motion. It was as if time pressed skip for a second & quickly went past meaningless dialogue like in a visual novel game.
- Now you try it. - Oikawa passed the ball to Arūna.
Slow sets... If Arūna remembers correctly, slow sets are usually high with a slow trajectory like in its name. Yeah, this should be easy.
However, the two still had one issue between them. It was their timing. Or, more so, Arūna's timing when it came to sets.
- Give me one that's easy to hit!
