Isabella

When I had reached home, Mom was snoring peacefully in bed. I had tripped over a beer can in the driveway and slit my arm on a rock, but at the very least I thought that there was just one. This time, the living room was not so messy but more beer cans still littered her bedroom floors. I hurried to get into my room and change into some sleepwear. At the anticipation of going online and trying to find everything I could on Caleb Waru, I had forgotten to text back anybody.
I had text messages from Kyla and Holden who had also called me a few times.

Crap, I thought I texted them both back.

Holden's last text to me was ,

'Where the hell are you? Are you still mad? Answer.'

'Sorry, had no service, was working on art homework. See you at school.'

Almost as soon as I sent it, he had replied with:

'You disappeared for hours, where the hell were you?'

I debated lying for a brief second, finally I decided that eventually Holden would have to just accept that Caleb was my partner for the project and so I wrote:

'I was with Caleb.'

Immediately my phone began to ring. I was far too tired to answer, but I hit the answer button and brought it to my ear.

"Hey-"

"What the hell do you mean you were with Caleb?"
his voice was furious.

"We started working on the project Holden, we had to eventually start someday."

"You didn't even tell me that, why did you keep it a secret?"

"I didn't keep it a secret, I didn't even know, he keeps dodging me. It happened so last minute."

"Where did you guys go?"

"Well, it had to be either his place or mine and moms been a crazy mess so we went to his house-"

"Are you kidding me?"

"Holden, relax, his parents were there it was fine," panic surfaced at my lie and I could not help but wonder how long it would take for him to unearth the truth. I merely hoped that saying this would calm him down but it proved to be fruitless because Holden grumbled some swear words and hung up.
I rolled my eyes and tossed my phone on my nightstand. I had never made it a habit to lie to Holden, before Caleb I could not recall the last time I had lied to him.
It's only been a couple days into the school year and already I had lied to him twice, and the theme of both of the lies had been Caleb.

I opened up my laptop and began my search regardless. I tired Caleb Waru on Facebook, Instagram and twitter. He appeared to be in none of the searches. I recalled him saying his parents were traditional and so they pulled him out of school at a young age. I could not imagine that they would have social media. I pondered on his hometown, Woodstock Vermont. I could not comprehend why it sounded so familiar.
I typed his phone number into google and the area code led to Woodstock. News articles had piled up as a result and I came across one titled Wolf Pack Bloodbath in Waru Forest Kills One Human.
