Isabella
A look of regret seemed to cross Caleb's face, he seemed to have decided in that exact moment that he had revealed too much to me.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up-"
"No, you shouldn't have."
Ouch. Suddenly, I felt so foolish.
"There were some wolves in the forest where we lived, they ended up killing each other, my little brother and my parents were caught in the crossfire and died," he seemed to conclude.
"So your parents, they died with your brother?"
Again he gritted his teeth, he did not look my way," yes."
"It was all over the news, the articles all read that only one person died," my voice had dropped so low that it was hardly audible.
"The articles were wrong," he insisted.
"The woods where it happened, it was called Waru Forest, that's your last name-"
"My ancestors were natives of the land."
"Why Eastsound, why live all the way across the country-"
"I wanted to get as far away from Woodstock as I could, do you have any more investigating or can I focus?"
"Yes, I'm sorry, you can focus."
I shrunk sheepishly into my seat and somehow, I regretted ever finding out. My last intention was to make him relive any of that, yet it seems like that's exactly what I had done. Caleb didn't speak another word to me and I was beginning to wonder if he ever would. Mr. Warner had eventually asked for volunteers to go down to the science room and retrieve some tubes from the closet. The tension was now thick enough that I had trouble breathing. At the desperation to place some distance between Caleb and I, my hand was the first to skyrocket."Ms.Isabella, you know where the chemistry closet is correct?" Mr. Warner asked and I eagerly nodded, already up from my seat and headed for the door.
"Great, you'll need some help carrying two boxes, Mr. Caleb, why don't you go help?"
I froze in place at the mention of his name.
You have to be kidding me.
I heard the rattling of his chair as he followed to where I was standing. I sent him a forced smile with eyebrows slightly raised and marched down the empty hallway towards the third door on the left. We did not exchange words, not even when we were alone in the empty dim lit classroom. The chemistry closet was the furthest away, I opened the door to reveal an almost pitch black room. I struggled to find the light switch, Caleb eventually joined me in the search. We were both inside of the closet that was no bigger than the one Holden and I had been in. I bumped into his back and he bumped into mine while we both mumbled muffled apologies to each other."I can't freaking find it," I burst out angrily.
"I don't think there is one," he calmly replied. I ditched the motive to find the light switch and instead raised my arms to search for the boxes of tubes.
