Holden drove me home and returned to school for his football meeting which meant that I had the entire house to myself. Of course I sat in the bed of the guest room cupping a bowl of crackers that I had stolen from the kitchen. The urge to shift seemed to grow stronger every minute. There was a pulsating hunger that wasn't satisfied by any of the food that I had found in the kitchen. I needed something fresh and raw, something that I could kill myself. I forced my thoughts back to think of Caleb. I knew that they weren't hurting him anymore because I couldn't feel any more pain. He must be locked up somewhere, their plan might be to continue torturing him after their meeting. I couldn't let them lay another finger on him. The thought alone was maddening. I thought of Dimitri and how much he cared. I wondered what his story was and if he too lost the people he loved at the hands of rogues.
Why is he so willing to help?
Maybe I'll ask him that the next time I see him. I thought of the sheriff hiding behind his own cowardly and how I'd be the first one to say I told you so when Aurora decided to come for their territory as well.
I texted my mother that I was okay and staying at a friend's, I didn't dare tell her who.
Sometime around seven, Kyla texted me that the party was for nine and so I started to get ready. I was fully dressed in jeans and a crop up when a strike of hunger slashed through my guts. The moon was rapidly approaching alongside it the darkness of the night. I needed to eat something. I ran downstairs and ripped the door for the freezer off. It went flying, hitting the ground with a deafening bang. There were raw frozen steaks that I ripped out of packages and chewed on. When I was finished with two, I moved on to a filet of salmon. It seemed that no matter how much I ate, it wasn't fresh enough. My mouth watered at the thought of the fresh turkey from the night I shifted. I was half way through ripping open the package for the salmon when I jumped at the sound of Holden.

"What the hell happened here?"

I turned to discover his shocked gaze. He was peering at the kitchen island that homed empty steak wrappers and the freezer door that was meters away from its hinges. I slowly set the salmon down, praying that it wasn't too obvious that I just inhaled most of his raw meat.

"I was hungry...the freezer door was loose..."

His gaze softened and he picked it up," I never noticed, maybe I broke it. Sometimes I'm too rough."

I stepped aside while he put it back in place. His eyes studied the empty packs of steak," you ate all that?"

"I'm sorry I was starving."

"Don't say sorry," he began to toss the packages into the garbage," I could get you better steaks from the restaurant down the street. It's fresher-"

"That's alright, I'm full now."

His eyes lost a hopeful spark. He nodded.

"Alright...well I'm gonna go get changed and we'll go to that party. Kyla told me you're coming."

I nodded.

He placed his hands on my shoulders and I struggled not to shake him off.
"I'm really happy you're coming."

I smiled as politely as I could. I was thinking of the salmon that was still on the counter. When I heard the last of his footsteps exit the kitchen, I ripped it open and devoured it in a few bites.
