The drive to Holden's was quiet. I decided to leave my car inside of the garage in case the rogues recognized it and ride with Holden back to his place. My mind was occupied with a billion things. I could still catch Holden giving me the side eye every few minutes. I was planless, the only idea now was to stay alive and steer as clear of the rogues as possible.
That meant living life as usual, surrounding myself with people like I was still an oblivious human.
Which meant that I'd have to go to school tomorrow. It would buy me time to orchestrate a plan. I wasn't giving up on Caleb, even if it got me killed in the process. It was my fault that he surrendered, and it will be my fault if he dies.Holden cleared his throat and I finally turned to look at him,"what?"
"We're here."
I realized that the car was stopped and we were indeed parked outside of his entryway.
"Oh, okay," I opened my door and stepped out of his car. He hurried to my side to hold my backpack for me and for a few seconds, it was an awkward exchange of tangled arms as he tried to pry the straps from my shoulders.
"Heavy," he finally muttered after the bag was secured in his grasp," I didn't want you to hurt yourself."
I could have made a face to send him crying. Instead I pursed my lips," thanks."
Up the steps and into the foyer now, we went up the spiral stairs and through the massive hallways until I stopped.
"Holden, I think for the first little while I'd prefer the guest bedroom."
He raised his eyebrows," but you always sleep in my bed."
Kyla and I both apparently, I thought.
"Look, I'm really trying to make this work, but I need space. I don't want to push myself too quickly."
"Alright," he looked defeated.
He led me to the closest ivory door on my right and handed me my bag," that's it."I smiled again," thank you."
He stood outside of the door for a little while just staring at me. I was tempted to roll my eyes and tell him to get the hell out of my face already. He leaned down and kissed my forehead quickly and wobbled back up to his room.
I spun on my heel wearing a scowl on my face that would definitely have gotten me kicked out and went into the guest bedroom.I spent the rest of the night tossing and turning, sleep was always without reach, I had the irresistible urge to run out into the murky forests and shift. I took a cold shower and another, I laid under the sheets with my hands under my bottom and told myself over and over again , you have to stay here, you're safer here, if they find you, you can't help Caleb.
Holden burst into the room sometime at around seven am. He was showered and dressed and bore a hopeful look on his face. I sat up suddenly feeling ambushed.
"What?" I was scowling.
"I was just gonna get some breakfast and go to school, are you coming?"
Why does he look so nervous? Jesus, he infuriates me.
"Yeah, I'll be down in a few minutes," I mumbled.
He looked as if he had more to say. He shut the door and I forced myself back into the shower.
