Kim's POV
I took a deep breath of relief after dropping myself on my office chair. The meeting was finally over and my boss seemed happy so that's an accomplishment I guess. I took my phone out to call my step mom. After dialing her number I pressed the device on my ear.
"Kimberly?"
"Hey mom, how are things going?" I asked.
"Well right now he's being neurologically evaluated and after that they are going to do some imaging tests they said, to check any brain bleeding and swelling and then some blood tests after." I nodded.
"That's good. I'll come by the hospital in an hour. Do you need anything?" I heard a knock on my door. "Come in!"
"No honey I'm good."
"Okay, I have to go. We'll talk soon." The secretary opened the door just as I hung up.
"Good morning Miss Adkins." She greeted still standing on the doorway.
"Morning."
"The boss wants to see you " She said.
"Oh okay." I stood up from my seat and walked to his office immediately. Upon arriving I knocked.
"Come in!" He said. I opened his door and walked in. "Miss Adkins please have a seat." I nodded and did as told before someone walked into his office without knocking. I looked back to be met by Lorena on the phone.
"I will see what I can do about that Darius but right now I gotta go. Bye." She hung up her phone and sat next to me. "Sorry about that." She said calmly.
"Darius?" Mr Yearwood asked and she nodded.
"He needs information about a person I know." She said dismissively.
Isn't it weird that she's so calm around her boss? Or are they friends since her uncle was the former auditor?
"Oh you kid's stuff, okay back to why I called you two here." Mr Yearwood started. "Now our investors were happy about this year's reports. It's been a good year like we all know and I couldn't be more happier than to finally rest on a good note." Rest? "Miss Adkins, I am happy about your progress here. You have earned my trust." I smiled politely.
"Thank you Sir." I said.
"If you need anything, don't ever hesitate to let me know. Your work here has earned you a place in my heart. Especially with how my rivals wanted to bring this company down these past few weeks."
Do your fucking job right, they said. Now look at me, I made an old man happy. Although he looked a little younger than his actual age.
"Thank you for the kind words Sir." I said again.
"I am saying this in front of my daughter because I want her to know who she can trust in our company."
Wait a minute did he say daughter? I looked over at Lorena quickly and she was smiling at her dad. She turned to me still smiling. I took a deep breath still trying to process the new information. 'who to trust?' I replayed his words. Does this mean the rumors were true? Mr Yearwood was retiring?
"Are you okay?" Lorena asked.
"Um yes, I'm okay." She nodded and her father continued talking about how he was ready to give his daughter his company, relating the history of the company.
I couldn't believe I was so stupid not to realise Lorena was the boss's daughter. Now that I look at them carefully, they really do look alike. This is really awkward and embarrassing.
Finally my boss finished his rant after what felt like forever and I decided to go to see my father. I drove to the hospital quickly and was met by Stephanie outside talking on the phone.
It wasn't until I was closer to her that I could understand the conversation from her end.
"Well he's still with the doctors so I still don't have any new information.....yes I will let you know once I do.... okay bye." She turned around to face me. "Oh Kimberly."
"Everything okay?" I meant the call and she understood.
"It's my sister. She's worried about Donald." Dad told me they were really close.
"I understand." I said as we walked back inside the building.
The last time I was in a hospital, I lost my mother. I hoped it wasn't the case with my dad. I still needed him a lot in my life.
....
"Hey dad." Laura kissed his cheek but instead of smiling he looked confused when he looked at all of us. The pain stung in my heart because I immediately knew why he was confused. He had forgotten about coming here.
"Kimberly?" I swallowed the lump in my throat and tried to smile. I sat next to him and took his hand in mine.
"Yes dad it's me." I said softly.
"Honey what are you doing home?" I looked at Stephanie and she let a tear fall. I looked back at my father and smiled again.
"We're not home."
"We're not?" I shook my head no.
"We're in the city. Do you still remember I got transferred back to New York?" I asked and he nodded.
"Of course I do, just yesterday we were talking about visiting you to see your new place." At least he still remembers that. His memory is not that lost.
"That was two weeks ago dad. Today was the first day of your treatment." His eyes widened.
"You told them?" He whispered.
"No you did." His eyes widened again but he looked at his wife this time around.
"Darling it's okay. I'm not mad anymore." Stephanie said quickly sitting on the other side of him.
"I don't understand." He said looking confused.
Dr Chambers walked in just before I could explain to him what has happened in the past two weeks.
"Who is he?" My father asked.
"Dr Chambers, Logan's best doctor." I said.
"You told him too?!" I sighed.
"Mr Adkins I'd advise you stay calm." He looked at me. "He doesn't need the stress now." I nodded. "Well the results came back and they show it's closed brain injury."
"Meaning?" Laura asked.
"Meaning nothing penetrated through the skull. The damage happened inside the skull." He explained. "As Mrs Adkins here has already explained it was a very bad fall that explains why. Falls often cause brain injury." I nodded in understanding.
"But that happened a long time ago, right honey?" My father asked his wife.
"Well Mr Adkins if you were carefully checked when it happened the tissues damaged would have been dealt with immediately before it got to this stage."
"Tissue damage?" Anna asked her eyes tearing.
"Yes. The rapid forward and backward movement and shaking of the brain inside the skull caused by the fall resulted in bruising and tearing of his brain tissues and his blood vessels." Chambers explained.
"Oh God!" Anna said.
"Okay is there anything that can be done to help my father? All these bad news are causing panick." I asked.
"Yes, a surgery Miss Adkins."
