The mansion looked different. It would always look different whenever I visit. Well, I think I've only visited the place twice, right? Or three times. I can't really keep up.
As if someone was watching me from the outside, the door opened before I got the chance to knock on it. A woman, maybe near her twenties, smiled at me softly.
I gave her a smile back.
"Mr. Montellia is expecting you." she said.
I tried to open my mouth, but no words came out since she walked away abruptly. I sucked it in and followed her inside. New paintings, and furniture. What the fuck has happened here?
It looked brighter, nicer. Maybe a little too nice.
I gave it another look, this time, I tried to look for clues as to why the place looked cheery all of a sudden. Maybe they had another event planned? Or a relative was going to visit. There should be a reason, at least.
I mean, who just changes everything in their mansion?
When we reached Alsace's office, the woman signaled me to wait.
"Mr. Montellia has a guest over, would you want someone to bring you a chair?" she spoke as if she was a robot. I shook my head and gave her a tight smile. Well, this was going nowhere near comfortable.
She bowed a little, her lips tightly shut. Then, she walked away, leaving me by myself in the bright, nice, cheerful hallway of the Montellia's mansion.
It was that cheerful that it made it look intimidating.
Well... since I didn't know when Alsace was going to finish with his guest, I wanted to explore. I mean, I got invited, I don't need a warrant to explore a friend's home.
My eyes found an interesting room to head in when I was walking. I rushed my way through the halls, my footsteps being light and swift. If I wanted to do this without being caught, I had to make it quick.
Looking back, I've never actually checked or even glanced at the whole area. With carpet floors and big, random cabinets that, in my guess, didn't have anything in it.
Unless...
I smirked, my hand reaching the cabinet handle. If there was something inside them, what would they be? Old pi—
"Anyone told you to snoop around, detective?"
I fell on the floor, my ass hitting the ground harder than I thought. I find the owner of the voice, his eyes slicing me in half, or he just looks at everyone like that.
No, I think this man has personal problems with me.
He doesn't show any feelings of concern, and that was my cue to stand the fuck up.
I sighed heavily while I brushed off dust.
"No." I spoke.
"Stop snooping, then. Nathaniel's dogs are much better than you." he said meaningly. I know it was supposed to come out in a mean way, I mean, hello? That whole sentence just sounded straight out mean. It doesn't even sound like a compliment.
