"Kaya Shiro," I whispered, looking in wonder at the image of the supposed Omega. She was considered the strongest Omega in Japan, beating even some Alphas in how much she could lift. She-
"What's that?"
I slammed the book shut and flung my fist toward the voice in shock. Hiroshi's hand had caught the attack, but I was still spooked by his appearance.
"What the fuck?" I spat in disbelief. "What are you doing in my room?"
"Ya left your keys in the door," he answered bluntly, jingling the articles together as he plopped them atop the book. "What're you reading that for?"
"Personal interest."
He leaned in toward me with two thin lines for eyes. He was reading into my soul for some answer that I knew wouldn't appear. Not to him at least.
"I'm busy," I interjected, turning away from him distantly. "Leave."
He paused, leaning back only slightly in thought. "Did something happen?" He tilted his head, examining me still from head to toe.
I hesitated before shaking my head. I couldn't help but feel a guilty titanium wall blocking my smooth path toward lying to my ally. Toward deceiving someone I should never deceive. Had I betrayed him?
"Could you learn properly today? Could you hear anything?" I asked, looking away from him nervously. "You really should get your shit together."
"I learned first-year English vocabulary today," he announced proudly, grinning as though it was an accomplishment. "I, me, my, mine. You, you, your, yours. He, him, his, his. She-" I simply clicked my tongue and the racing lips of the annoyance had ceased. A burst of hearty laughter filled the room, and my eyes were drawn to its source magnetically.
"I can't believe you haven't been expelled yet," I breathed, eyeing the pathetic excuse of an Alpha. "They'll probably strip you of your Trait. Use your prideful bullshit during the SGSA, and there's no questioning it."
He grinned. "I plan on it. Bein' an Alpha isn't all that great."
"I wouldn't know," I joked, pushing myself to my feet with a small huff. "I'm going out."
My heart felt so light after our conversation. The prick had probably broken into my house; the keys he'd handed me weren't mine. He was pitiful, really, and he was in no way ready for the world we were being thrown into, but he was... he was a good friend.
"Get the fuck out of my house."
-
As for Kaya Shiro... she was recorded to have lived in a small town quite close to where I lived. I'd take a little vacation.
I didn't wait until morning came to begin my journey. The sooner I began this trip, the more time I would have. It was still quite early in the afternoon. I would probably reach the woman's home by dinnertime.
"Mama!" I called downstairs as I dumped my schoolbag onto my bed. Notebooks and pens that were organized only a second before were now scattered in a jumbled mess. "Mama, I'm going on a hike with some friends, okay? I'll be back by tonight, but uh... if I'm not, I'm probably sleeping over at someone's house. Not sure what their plans are yet!"
"Are you serious?" she responded with a chuckle. "And what if you're in trouble? How am I supposed to know?"
"I'll call home if something happens," I obliged, stuffing my now empty bag with emergency clothes. "I'll be fine though."
"Alright," she sighed. "Who all's going?" She leaned curiously against my doorframe, smiling rather than looking frightening during her interrogation. "Any Omegas?"
"Maybe." I shrugged, stripping off my jacket and dropping it atop my school supplies. "Don't really know. My new deskmate invited me." I paused, tapping my finger lightly on the post of my bed in thought. "I think his name was Bob."
"Bob?" Her voice spiked in pitch toward the end, her brows raising in surprise. "Is he... a foreigner? Isn't your current deskmate your partner for the SGSA?"
"Yeah," I mumbled, continuing to stuff into my bag naturally. "He's all over the place, but he's nice. I've gotta go, Mama. We're meeting in a few minutes."
She smiled and nodded softly as I passed her. "Please be safe," she called out as I stepped toward the stairs.
"Ah, Mama!" I paused, looking back at her knowingly. "Did you let Hiroshi in? He took your keys."
"What?!" she exclaimed, patting her pockets for the missing items in confusion.
"They're on my desk! Bye, Mama."
The air outside seemed to foreshadow a rough journey with its growing bitterness. I shivered as the wind slapped my cheeks aggressively. It only did so knowing I couldn't fight back. Fucking coward.
The roads were nearly empty, only a few familiar faces passing by as I strolled toward the bus stop. I heard some laughter and some yelling, listening only out of boredom as I silently walked.
The bus stop in sight was vacant, a few fallen leaves of red and brown drifting by the cold, worn-out seats. As I sat down, my butt shivered and complained, but I remained silent.
"It's peaceful..." for the first time in a while.
I loved the thrill of an Alpha's life, but I enjoyed the simplicity of silence. The warmth of being wrapped in a fluffy coat as the world was freezing in solid blue ice around me wasn't so bad.
"Maybe the other world is more like this," I whispered, looking down at my hands, gloved and warm and perfectly safe from harm. "Calm and pleasant."
"Is that what your instincts are telling you? Or who?" Jotaro suddenly asked, leaning against the back of the bench where he sat. I hadn't seen or heard him sit.
I let out a single huff of a laugh in disbelief. "I was just thinking. Where'd you come from?"
"I was passing by," he answered without much interest. He had a lit cigarette in his right hand, the smell of tobacco wrenching its way mercilessly through my sensitive nose. I winced at the smell, turning away from him just as quickly as I'd looked his way.
"I'm going to find some old hag who's probably like me," I explained, knowing full well he hadn't asked and hadn't meant to. "She's the strongest Omega in Japan."
"You know where she lives?" he asked skeptically, breathing in through the stick of death casually. "Is it far from here?"
"She's not exactly living too well," I sighed, recalling the pitiful words I'd read on the worn-out pages. "Her husband left her with nothing but some run-down cabin in the middle of fucking nowhere. She had her strength, but the award could only give her so much. She's an Omega without her mate. She's probably on her deathbed by now as well. The only place she would've moved was six feet under where I'm going now."
"I see," he mumbled, taking another breath before flicking it onto the abused ground. He rubbed his shoe over the bud, and the smoke slowly drifted into the cold dimming air without so much as a destination.
"She'll have answers," I assured myself, nodding confidently. "She'll know what the fuck is going on."
