"Eh? What the fuck is that?" a boy scoffed the moment I stepped foot into the crowded room.
"Were we the only ones to get the message?" I whispered to the silent Alpha beside me. His ears seemed to be deaf lately, though. I looked around at each and every face I knew and didn't. There were about twenty of us, only a small number of that consisting of those from my class.
"Look at that ass," another guy mumbled, though it was hard to pick out which one.
I smirked, my hand moving before my brain had even come up with the idea. I slapped my palm against Jotaro's lower back, my fingers tingling in protest.
"Did you hear that?" I asked, his eyes glancing toward mine, showing a tired annoyance. "They've already fallen for your ass."
"All participants are set. Please stand by."
I let my eyes wander in the few seconds of impatiently waiting. I was right. I was the only female.
"Participants, please stand with your heels against the perimeter of the room."
Everyone paused in their nervous movement, the bickering of the rowdy crowd coming to an abrupt end. Then feet began to shuffle toward the perimeter as they'd been instructed to do. Jotaro stayed close beside me, though seemingly oblivious to the fact. His arm rubbed against my own with each tiny step backward. As our asses bumped the walls, everything fell silent once again.
And it reminded me that... although we were arrogant teenagers who would do anything to come out on top, we were all already there.
"I'm sure you recognize many faces, young elites," a new voice suddenly exclaimed, the excited tone of the man surrounding us with a growing annoyance. Some seemed to recognize the voice, rolling their eyes as soon as the first word echoed throughout the room. "And I'm sure you're all extremely eager to get started! However..." his voice suddenly lowered exponentially. Each of us flinched at the change, our ears twitching as his deep, slow voice spoke careful words. "You all have already failed."
Not a single cell moved in that room. We might as well have died, it was so lifeless. Every cheek, every hand, every lip grew so very pale. Perhaps we had all plummeted from the tower we worked our asses off to build from scratch.
"By growing up so darn fast!" he sobbed, his deafening breath burning at my blazing ears. I glanced toward Jotaro as sighs and whispers of annoyance and relief erupted around me. He was indifferent to the situation, of fucking course.
"Students..." The voice suddenly changed. My ears perked at the sound; it was Sensei's old man grumbles. "I will give you one last piece of advice," he informed, pausing patiently for the bickering to settle once again. "I know none of you are the type, but do not be humble. Understand what your existence means at this moment. At every moment from today on, understand what it means to be where you are. You weren't given this. You weren't born with this. It was you who got you here, and it's you who will get you there. Understand... and use it."
"Sensei," I mumbled silently, looking down at the ground as the mic shuffled around for only an instant.
"The assessment will now begin."
"Jotaro," I spoke, my voice ever so quiet. He didn't move but listened nonetheless. "We'll have to thank him properly when this is all over."
He nodded subtly, his eyes slowly traveling toward mine that didn't meet his for once.
"Jotaro," I muttered again, letting my hands drop to my sides as a soft, almost sad feeling drifted through my warm blood. "When this is all over, let's go our separate ways."
I tilted my head toward him gently, my smile so light and genuine. He looked indifferent. It was the only word I could think of to describe him that day.
"Okay?"
"This isn't real," he objected suddenly, his voice low and calm yet seemingly quite urgent to be heard. "We've already talked about it."
"I think both you and I know we can't really be friends." I nodded as I thought over my words. "Or allies or whatever you want to call it 'cause... it was all too coincidental."
"Bullshit," he scoffed, looking away from my dark orbs in a growing frustration. "You just want to throw it away? Everything? Don't you under-"
Suddenly, the door I'd been leaning against flew open, my body tipping backward all so suddenly. Jotaro's hand reached for me in aid, but my fingers grasped the entirety of his arm instead. I chuckled as I found my lost balance, looking at him in appreciation. His eyes were on the owners of the footsteps approaching me at a speedy rate. He pulled me away from the door, at least ten men walking in behind me. They were partnered, each pair carrying a, once again, white table into the room. They set them down in rows quite carefully, leaving immediately after.
"With the partner you've been assigned, find an empty table and claim it."
Jotaro and I glanced only briefly at each other before taking those first two steps forward. No one else seemed to move. Of course, we were the main characters; it was a given that we both decided to choose the table that centered the room. As I placed my hand on the table curiously, my fingertips marking the surface unnoticeably with my nervousness, the room was set into motion once again.
"All participants have claimed a table. ... The assessment will now begin. Task: Truth or Dare."
The room erupted with grumbles and whispers of confusion. A children's game? A game? Perhaps this was a part of the alteration I had caused. Who knew? Who the fuck cared? We were playing a children's game.
"Rules: From the deck sitting in the center of each table, player one, who will be decided shortly, will draw a card." Each of us looked down at the table in confusion, for there were no cards. However, we were quickly taken aback as the deck met our eyes. Not just a single deck. Seven decks were organized carefully around the table, each of them designed with a unique symbol. "The underside of the card should meet your eyes only. This card will either reveal to be a Truth or Dare card. It will also reveal the category with which the card is associated. The Truth card has three categories: Dove, Otter, and Fox. The Dare card has three categories: Owl, Buffalo, and Dog. Draw a second card from the corresponding desk. The card will instruct you from there. You may decide who is Player One and who is Player Two. Begin." The voice disappeared, and only silence was left in the brightness of the room.
I took a deep breath, for it was all I could do. Then, I slid myself a card from the center deck.
