Though I was becoming tired, I managed to clean up the mess that was left behind downstairs. I went upstairs and prepared to clean the guest bedroom but when I flicked the light switch on, the room was completely spotless as if Kurapika's presence had never graced it. The bed he had just slept in the previous night now looked like it hadn't been touched in years. A grin grew on my face at his consideration.
I then took a shower, changed into warm pajamas, washed my face, brushed my teeth, and returned to the box from Kurapika that sat on my vanity. The crimson red ribbon that was tied around it was just waiting to be unraveled.
I closed one eye as I opened the box, almost expecting something to jump out at me. My history with gifts presented in small boxes wasn't exactly great.
The lid was finally off and I took a deep breath. Seconds later I cautiously pulled out a necklace. The chain was silver and the pendant was a crescent moon of a ruby hue, the same color as the earring that dangled from Kurapika's left ear.
And it's a necklace. I'm getting major déjà vu right now.
Worry bubbled up inside me as I thought about what happened the last time I received a necklace, the one from Antonio. But those worries melted away when I pulled out a small envelope with Kurapika's name written on it in cursive with a black pen. I remembered who the gift was from and I knew he would never do anything as grisly as my brother.
I began to read the letter internally:
'Dear (Y/n),
I hope that you like the gift. I know that your experience with necklaces has been quite negative, but when we were in Glam Gas Land I saw this necklace in one of the shops in the Princess Hotel and couldn't help but think of you. I know that you love outer space and I remembered that Thanksgiving was drawing near, so I bought it. It also reminded me of the Nen ability you used on the Spiders. Take this as a token of my appreciation and admiration for you.
Always, Kurapika'
My heart fluttered as my eyes moved along the paper. A blush rose to my cheeks as I smiled ear to ear. If I hadn't been alone in my room, I would have been hiding my face with everything I had inside of me in order to conceal how the butterflies were dancing arduously in my guts.
Staring at the letter for a moment longer, I admired Kurapika's perfect handwriting and the words behind it, before tucking it away inside of the box. I stepped over to my mirror and put the necklace around my neck. It twinkled in the light whenever I moved. It was just my taste and the fact that it matched Kurapika's earring made me feel closer to him. I wondered if he had considered the fact we would be matching when he bought it.
I unlocked my phone to send him a 'thank you' text and there was already a message from him, telling me that he got home safely, just as I told him to do. We then went on to exchange a few messages.
"I just got home. You told me to tell you, so here I am telling you."
"Haha good :) Thank you so much for the necklace, I love it. That was really thoughtful of you. I'll be sure to return the favor soon. <3"
