We arrived at District 12 two days later, much to my relief. Antonia had been driving me up the wall, and I was at serious risk of throttling her when we finally sneaked off the train.
“Can we look round the District? I’ve only seen it once before, I might never get another chance!” Antonia moaned, pulling at my sleeve.
“No way. Raven needs me, Tonia. We need to get there as soon as possible.”
“Raven? Who is Raven?”
“Not now, Tonia.”
Antonia moaned, but knew I wouldn’t be swayed, and so followed me to the weak point in the fence that I’d used several times when visiting Twelve. It was the only way out of the District, and I thanked God it was there. We crossed the fence safely and I headed down the quickest route, via the old train tracks which were overgrown with weeds and rubble.
“I never thought there was a rail line to District Thirteen.”
“Of course there is. How do you think they used to send the goods to the Capitol.”
“Oh yeah. Of course.”
“If we walk quickly, we can be there in four days.”
“You think?”
“Of course. We’re victors for a reason. Now get a move on.”
Funnily enough, no matter how fast we walked, we only covered half the distance I’d get across on my own in each day. It took an entire week of walking to get to District Thirteen. It was such a relief to see the rubble and wreckage of a District that I sunk to my knees in relief. Antonia stared at the remains of the District, obviously not impressed.
“This is it? I thought you said it was impressive?”
“It is. Come on, I’ll show you.”
I located the entrance by the landing pad, and was greeted by several soldiers. I asked them to call for Pandora, who I hoped might be back. They told me she was, and went to fetch her.
“Pandora?” Antonia said, phrasing her name like a question.
“My girlfriend.”
“Ahh, so I finally meet your mysterious girl. Tell me, there must be something wrong with her for her to be with you. What is it? Does she have three heads? Or a tail, perhaps?”
“Shut up, Antonia. There is nothing wrong with her. You just want there to be,” I snapped.
“You’re only shouting because you know I’m right. Is she even human?”
“Stop it.”
