I was helping Kiri with the healing oils, she had taught me what ingredients to use and how to mix them to get certain oils. We had been doing it for most of our afternoon since the boys were out raiding a train along with the other warriors. I had begged them to let me go with them but of course I had been told to stay and help Kiri.
Don't get me wrong I love spending time with her. She's my best friend, we do everything together. But that meant Lo'ak would boast about it when he'd be back knowing it annoyed me.
I was about to ask Kiri if we could get a break when suddenly I heard Ikrans screeching. They had returned. We both stepped outside trying to find the boys.
I heard yelling from the left and immediately recognised Jake's voice. Kiri was first to run, me following behind. When we got there I could now see properly Jake scolding Neteyam and Lo'ak.
It's what you call karma.
My hapiness was short lived.
"Jesus, I let you two idiots fly a mission and you disobey direct orders!" he turns to Kiri who had started examining Neteyams wound "Kiri can you go help your grandmother heal the wounded."
"My brother is wounded"
I try and get closer to see which one is hurt, Tuk close behind me. Jake spots us immediately.
"Tuk, Rei go with her. Go!" he shoos us away.
Kiri rolls her eyes linking her arm with mine. I look back making eye contact with Neteyam. I look at him worriedly as if to ask him are you okay but he just shakes his head looking back down. I don't hear the rest of the scolding as we enter our hut.
---
It's night time. Everyone is gathered in the hut as me, Kiri and the Tsahik tend to Neteyam's wound. Everytime grandmother touches his wound he squirms in pain which earns him a comment from Spider.
Grandmother passes me the bowl as her and Kiri talk. "Rub this on his back child. You need to start learning how to be useful when you're not out fighting." She pushes my shoulders down making me sit behind Neteyam.
I dip my hand in the thick cream before scooping some out and applying it on the wound.
"Ow"
Spider snorts, "Awwww, does baby want a kiss on the booboo?"
"Shut it Spider" I snap at him "Want me to remind you how you cried when Kiri did it to you last time?" He shuts up.
I put the bowl down and start rubbing the cream in circles. I can feel his shoulder are tense and his breathing shallow.
"It might hurt a little but try to relax" I mutter.
He doesn't listen.
I put my hands on his shoulders and push them down to make him relax. I rub them to make the less tense. "Syor"(relax) Although his shoulders aren't as tense now, I can hear his heartbeat accelerate. I hit his head. "I said relax."
"OW! Okay" he rubs his head forgetting about his injury which makes him groan in pain.
"You skxawng" I take some more oil and start rubbing again. This time I try to be more gentle. I can feel him slowly relax the more I keep rubbing. I feel like I'm in a trance, I'm so concentrated on his heartbeat and the way his shoulders are so smooth.
"Well done child. Let him rest"
I nearly jump out of my skin when I hear the Tsahik behind me. This doesn't go unnoticed by Kiri who looks at me for a moment her eyebrows furrowed. She gives me a questioning look before I look away.
I get up before helping up Neteyam. I touch his arm "are you better?"
"yeah, thanks" he gives me a small smile before sliding his hand down my arm and giving my hand a tight squeeze as a thank you. I smile back. His eyes are a beautiful bright yellow almost glowing in the night and I can even see my reflexion in them-
"Ew. Neteyam let's go!" Spider get's in between us taking Neteyam by the arm and giding him away.
That kind of behaviour will get him not one, but two slaps next time I see him. That's a promise I definitely won't break but for now I just roll my eyes and go over to Kiri and Lo'ak.
"So how long you grounded for?" I ask him, crouching down next to him.
" A month of no flying" he sighs.I pat his back to try and console him.
"I'm gonna go anyways" he states.
"Here we go again-"
"I'm coming with you" Kiri states.
"What? Kiri!" I try to reason with her. No point, her mind is made up.
"Where are you guys going? Let me come with you! I will tell dad if you don't" Tuk pleads.
"Shhhh! Stop yelling you'll ruin everything Tuk" Lo'ak covers her mouth. I glare at him.
"Pretty please" she keeps pleading.
"Fine! But you better keep up, I'm not your babysitter"
"I pinky promise" She gives him a toothy grin but without all her teeth.
Lo'ak just rolls his eyes in response as Kiri smirks.
Tommorrow is going to be fun.
