- 3 weeks later -
Milori jumped as a missive runner burst through the palace doors and into his inner throne room, disturbing his train of thought.
Before he could even begin to ponder who would be sending him a message, the man bowed quickly and thrust a hefty envelope forward.
Looking at it with interest, Milori waved his hand and a guard stepped forward, taking it from the man and in one fluid motion, handing it on to Milori.
All at once the room seemed to become void of people, noise and distraction as he looked at the senders' information.
Clarion.
Glee filled him.
Finally she had responded to his numerous correspondences, he thought.
He ripped it open without care, desperate to see what she may have said.
Disappointment, however, was not an adequate enough word to describe how he felt upon seeing no hand written letter, no words of regret and most importantly, no promise of return.
He let what was inside flutter to his lap, already having seen the title.
The envelope contained their divorce agreement.
Gingerly, Milori unfolded it, trying to keep his composure.
As though it held poison, he held it with unsteady fingertips and away from his body.
The document already held Clarions' signature and had been notarized.
All he had to do was sign and it would be official.
This was it, she truly wanted no more contact.
He searched the rest of the papers desperately, sure that she would have left some kind of note, but none was to be found.
Standing, Milori gripped the document, thanked and dismissed the missive runner, and lastly ordered everyone out, even his personal guards.
No one needed to be witness to his grief.
No one could know yet what was happening.
Walking down the steps of his throne, he walked across the way to his desk.
Without pause, he opened a random drawer in the desk and shoved the papers inside, closing it.
What now?
Obviously clarion would have him sign the papers, split the kingdom and be done.
But it was not that simple, or rather he would not make it that simple.
There was an ocean of history between them and she needed to be reminded of that, signing a legal agreement would not patch the hurt he had caused her.
Leaning on the back of his desk chair, he thought over options.
Originally he had come back from Pixie Hollow, willing to wait out clarion.
Eventually she would return to usher in summer, of that he was sure.
When he had found her gone that frustrating night a few weeks ago, he knew he had to return to the winter realm and wait her out.
One thing about his wife was that she would be rushed by no one.
Today blew that plan to shambles.
He'd be lucky if he wasn't already banned entirely from entering Pixie Hollow.
Once more he had to painfully laugh at the irony.
Only a few years ago he was desperate to divorce and be rid of Clarion, yet here he was, just as desperate for a mere glimpse of her.
Carelessly, he pulled a set of keys from his pocket and locked the drawer that held those wretched documents.
He'd never sign them, at least not voluntarily.
Clarion acted like this would solve everything, when in fact it would ruin everything they had built.
Mass confusion and chaos would follow their divorce announcement and the peace their union had collectively brought would cease.
The largest kingdom on Neverland could not just simply be split in two, imbalance would occur everywhere and bring havoc to the island.
And all of that in turn would make them weak to attacks, whether that be from the human realm, pirates or even neighboring kingdoms.
On top of all that, the biological toll would be astronomical.
Splitting the seasons once more into separate entities vs the network it was right now would be insane and deadly.
Tons of crops, animals and time would be wasted if the cycle they had created was disrupted.
Groaning, Milori rubbed his eyes.
If only he had been grateful for what he had when it had all been so perfect and simple.
That's what clarion brought to him, simplicity and perfection.
She was the reason two worlds could coexist so effortlessly.
And if he abided her wishes, she would also be the reason for its downfall.
There were so many reasons to keep fighting for what they had, but most importantly Milori would always think of her as his.
Nothing could change that.
In the very least, the finer details still needed to be discussed in-person if Milori was ever to sign those documents.
He would never sign until he knew that she understood the toll their divorce would bring to their subjects.
And him.
