"Good evening my lord, how do you feel? Any better?" Fairy Mary asked breathlessly.
Lord Milori looked towards Fairy Mary from his bed and she almost melted right there.
My, even sick, pale and downright disheveled he looked as strong and as handsome as ever! Too bad her heart belonged to another she thought but with not an ounce of sadness to be found.
"Fairy Mary, I positively feel like death", he stated. "These nurses know absolutely nothing", he again said pointedly.
'Well your not much of a field of daisies yourself', Fairy Mary thought to herself, while walking towards his ice-stand but refrained from saying so out loud to his majesty out of respect.
"Now, now my lord, they are doing everything they possibly can", Fairy Mary replied while sorting and cleaning the table top.
Lord Milori sighed deeply and relented,
"Your right Fairy Mary they have done absolutely amazing with the resources given to them."
Fairy Mary knew this was her only chance. "You know how you can end this much quicker?"
She asked the lord - very innocently - even smiling for good measure.
"NO, absolutely NOT!" Lord Milori roared. "You will not tell Clarion of this, you will not involve her, and you will not - bring - her - here!" He yelled and practically shook.
"Is that clear Fairy Mary?" He asked.
"Yes my lord, I will most definitely not bring her here", She promised.
Oh no, Fairy Mary thought, She'll bring herself! She practically giggled!
"Fairy Mary that was only par-" the lord was interrupted mid-sentence when Fairy Mary changed the subject.
"It works out for the best anyway", she said, turning away to organize his medicines on the bedside table all the while making sure to keep her peripheral vision on him.
"And why is that?" he asked.
His majesty was smart enough to see bait when presented, but her statement had piqued his interest.
"Well, Queen Clarion does have an important visitor tomorrow and while I'm sure she would have dropped everything to tend to you, HE would have been mightily disappointed", Fairy Mary said, taking special care to emphasize the particular "he" in question.
She then slipped an arm compressor sleeve around his large bicep and gave him the rubber presser for his hand.
"Now let's check that blood pressure", she stated as though she had not just revealed a piece of startling news to him.
'It's working', she thought... 'He's hooked'.
"Now squeeze when I say to."
She smiled and began administrations.
However, the Lord of Winter could not just simply move on, he had to know!
"Who's this HE Fairy Mary?"
He asked and was afraid his voice hitched just a little bit.
"Oh no one really, just a young lord from the valley over, he wishes to seek her council on pressing matters... even heard he was to mention an alliance."
She bent closer and whispered the last part as though sharing a great secret.
"How old is he? What does he look like? Is he tall? Strong? Wealthy? What intentions does he have with Clarion?"
He shot off rapid-fire questions to Fairy Mary and she had to restrain herself from laughing.
"Well to answer your last question my lord, word travels fast and... I heard he wishes to court and eventually marry Queen Clarion." Fairy Mary let that ominously hang and then suddenly said "squeeze."
And did he ever.
Immediately Milori did as told and popped off the rubber grip in one fluid movement.
Fairy Mary feigned surprise, grabbed the spent one and walked to the other side of the room to rummage for another, letting the Lord of Winter stew in his newfound findings.
When Fairy Mary uttered the words 'court' and 'Clarion', Lord Milori knew with an upmost certainty that those two C's did not belong together, unless of course he was the one doing it.
Jealous and possessive rage like he never felt before nearly pummeled him and he realized he couldn't breathe.
So some little sparrow man owned a few forests, how dare he think that gives him the right to call upon HIS Clarion!
He shook his head and corrected him self, Queen Clarion.
Not his.
He lost that right when he broke her heart to protect himself from caring too much.
He thought back to the day she had told him all her deepest hopes and dreams for the future.
For them.
He knew at that moment he wanted everything that she did, every last bit.
But that is what had happened last time, he thought.
He had crossed the border the first time and lost her... blast the wings!
He couldn't care less.
He'd sooner lose them again, his arms, legs and everything else he had if it assured him he would never lose her again.
He thought back to the matter at hand and pondered on what to do.
And without thinking, he did what he always unconsciously did when there was a major issue at hand... he paced.
Or tried to.
He pushed himself up, put his feet on the floor, stood, took one step and immediately began to crumple to the floor.
Blast this illness!
Milori held out his hands quickly, bracing for the hard impact of the floor.
He had completely forgotten his situation. Faintly, almost as though far away, he heard Fairy Marys' scream.
However right before he could feel the sting of the fast approaching floor, he felt very slender, feminine and long arms embrace him from the front, wrapping around his chest, saving him from hitting the hard ice.
