Ashe walked the halls with Avalon the next day, trying to keep up as she chattered on about the newest development in her life.
But it was hard for him to focus or retain any of the information she was spewing as he had a lot of other things on his mind.
Namely that one of his fathers' most loyal subjects had come to him in the night, saying that he and all the other ex Hinter citizens were being questioned.
About him.
And Skye.
It had been nearly 4 years ago that he snuck into the library records and stole the files on all his existing subjects.
He had destroyed them both to protect him and Skye as well as his people.
Racist comments and bigotry were nothing new to the much disliked people of the desert/caves, however he'd do anything he could to help the people who followed his father unfailingly for years.
He chuckled silently, sure did take Milori long enough to find out someone had tampered with the files.
In a last minute decision, Ash had decided to leave his own file as well as his uncles' to throw off suspicion.
He figured the only reason someone would be checking the files would be for them and if their files were the only ones missing that would be too obvious.
Plus there was nothing incriminating on the papers.
And it was easy enough to tell his subjects what they could and could not reveal if they were to be questioned.
Stick to what the papers say, nothing more and nothing less his uncle would tell them.
However hiding information was getting more difficult.
His father was not exactly the most revered king in Neverland and his people were not aware that Ash and Skye were still actively trying to get back their birthright.
Many Hinters enjoyed living in the winter realm under Clarion and Miloris' rule in fact, and did not want to be reminded of the past.
He knew someone would slip soon, or worse - be bought.
But many would do what Skye asked of them, if not for loyalty then out of respect.
All of a sudden, Avalon had come to a stop and peered up at him questioningly.
"Well? What do you think?"
Sweat beaded out onto his forehead as he realized his mistake in not listening.
"Uh, yes, I think you should do what... your heart tells you and if it feels right, you should do it..."
He stammered his reply, hoping she had not been asking him to take her skydiving or worse.
A huge smile lit up her face and he felt himself relax.
She really was adorable.
In a little sister kind of way.
He ruffled the top of her head and smiled back.
"Great! What do you say to 7:30 tonight then? Make sure to wear your best uniform and I'll pick the spot."
As fast as his muscles had relaxed at her smile, they tensed back up instantly and dread filled him.
So much worse.
"Wait the spot? For what?"
She looked up at him once more and swatted his shoulder playfully, as though he had gone daft.
"Our date silly. We can't just go anywhere it has to be special. Ok I'll see you later tonight."
Letting out a giggle, she began to skip away, but Ash still stood, frozen in shock.
Good lord, Milori was going to kill him. Frantically, he thought of how he could amend this but nothing came to mind.
He needed to end this.
Uncle would just need to find another way in driving a rift for his revenge, Ash could no longer keep lying to a child.
One who had quickly became a little sister to him.
Making his way towards Skye's chamber, he rehearsed what he was going to say.
