"Keeper!"
Milori called out his friends' title a few more times before the graying fairy finally appeared from behind a towering stack of books.
Spotting him, Milori quickly walked to meet him in the middle of the study.
"I'm in need of your services, Dewey."
The portly fairy chuckled at this and seemed indifferent to Miloris' curt/urgent tone.
"You know some would say hello or howdy-do first."
Milori normally would have obliged The Keepers' regular greeting, however his mind was pressed for answers and he could not be dissuaded from his mission.
"I've no time for hellos, Avalon and Clarion might be in danger."
At this, Dewey gasped, his hand going to his mouth.
"Sakes alive, what's wrong?"
"Never mind that, how much do you know about Ranger Skye and Ash, the missive runner."
Shaking his head, the keeper looked as though to be searching his brain pensively but nothing came up.
Saying as much, Milori tried to understand Dewey as his accent began to jumble his words in his excitement.
"I'm sorry my lord, I know nothing of them off the top of my head. I've little interaction with either but perhaps the records will be of help. We keep biological documentation on every fairy born in the kingdom along with recent immigrants. If that fails my wife may even be of service, I hear she deals a lot with the messenger boys."
Milori frowned at this last bit of information, forgetting that Dewey had even gotten married.
However he soon remembered the elegant but intimate wedding he and Clarion were invited to about a year ago.
Brightening he replied, "Ahh yes and how is the Mrs? Going splendidly?"
Seemingly happy to be on a familiar topic, Dewey responded with a smile,
"You know Fairy Mary, she is so easily stressed by everything but I'm glad she and I finally followed in your footsteps and got married. Seems like just yesterday she and The Queen were consulting me on how to save your life."
He chuckled a little at this but Milori was not smiling.
He too thought back to the time when Clarion almost died in his arms.
With such sobering thoughts, Milori was brought back to the task at hand.
"Look, it may be nothing but I have to make sure. God only knows how much both of my girls seem to attract danger. One quite more than the other."
The Keeper nodded his head gravelly and turned around, walking further into the library.
"Follow me, I'll take you to where we store the records and you can browse the names."
Milori eagerly followed.
"Also I believe I already know where they originally hail from."
The keeper kept walking but turned to raise an eyebrow at him.
"If your sure they are not birthright winter fairies, I'll take you to the file designated for naturalized citizens. Majority come from the Hinterland border wars. Although it's nearly even with warm fairy subjects, including our wives."
At this, Milori nearly stumbled as they quickly turned the corner into a dimly-lit hall.
"You mean to say even Clarion has a file? And Fairy Mary?"
Dewey snorted, "EVERY fairy not born here has one my Lord, per your fathers' request, so that would include our spouses."
Milori saved that tidbit of information for later, it might be interesting to look at her file on a boring evening.
Finally The Keeper came to a halting stop and Milori barely avoided running into him.
In front stood a battered and old filing cabinet. With surprisingly deft hands, The keeper found the correct drawer and pulled it open, quickly scanning the tabs.
Moving to the side he held out his hand,
"Here it is my Lord, anyone from this point and back is a technical alien to our sect. You'll find the Hinterland refugees to be in the very front though and everyone else in the back. I'll still question Mary for you and send word if she has anything of importance to say on the matter."
Nodding his approval, Milori thanked The Keeper who nodded in kind and left him to his devices.
Vaguely Milori hoped he could find his way back as The Keeper disappeared behind towering shelves.
He might be a king who knew his dominion well but that didn't mean he frequented this dark and damp storage room in the back of the library.
Settling his eyes on the files, he began to scan and suddenly came upon the persons of interest.
In fact, they were right next to each other, a happening that Milori counted as a lucky coincidence.
Plucking the necessary documents out, he found both Ash and Skye's files only contained one piece of paper.
Still not having read any information, Milori saw that both papers only had a few lines of neat, typed script.
This better be good, whatever it was.
