"WELL, HOW WAS THE DATE? WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO?" GWEN AND ALEX HAD BEEN ON THE phone for an hour. After Alex had let slip that Peter had asked to hang out with her, Gwen was ecstatic."It was nothing, Gwen, we just went to the movies, and then we got frozen yogurt. Gwen, he's the sweetest. He loves his Aunt and Uncle, and he's passionate about photography." Alex gushed. She was lying on her bed with her feet kicked up.
"Sounds like someone has a thing for Peter Parker," Alex could hear the smirk in her friend's voice as she spoke to her through the phone. Alex and Peter had both gone to see a movie. She didn't know if Peter did my watching because, throughout the film, she could feel his eyes on her.
Afterward, the two went for Frozen yogurt. They had the chance to tell each other about their lives. Alex learned the sad truth about his parents and how they passed away when he was little.
"Oh, hush, Gwen."
"Admit it, I was right. You like Peter," When Alex fault her phone vibrating against her cheek, she removed the phone from her ear and looked at it. It was Peter, his name, along with his contact picture, popped up on her phone.
"Hang on, Gwen, I'll call you back." Before Gwen could reply, Alex quickly hung up on her and hurriedly answered Peter's call. The other end of the phone was silent before she heard wailing on the other end. Alex shot up from her bed and said, "Peter?! Hello? What's going on?" Still nothing, her hands began to get clammy and sweaty.
"A-Alex!" Peter whined as he tried to talk, "I need you, Please! I need y-you to meet me." Alex's breathing began to pick up, and before she knew what she was doing, she was slipping her jacket and shoes on.
"Peter, where are you? What's going on? Talk to me, please!" Alex was halfway down the stairs when she snatched her moms' car keys and ran out the door. Alex didn't have her license-yet, but Peter needed her.
"It's... Uncle Ben, he's been shot; I need you please, please." A lump formed in her throat, and tears threatened to spill from her eyes. "I'm on my way, Pete." Meanwhile, Peter was sitting on the curl next to one of the cop cars.
He was numb, and blood covered his hands. The police car lights flashed in his face and all around the street. "Deceased. He bled out instantly. There's nothing we could have done." Peter heard one of the paramedics tell the cops.
The two officers looked over at him, sighing. Alex parked across the street before getting out and running over to him, "Peter! Peter!" He looked up, his eyes bloodshot and teary.
Alex looked at the street to see a pool of blood on the ground. She tried to steady her breathing as she walked over to him.
"Oh Peter, I'm...I'm so sorry," She gasped. Peter grabbed her-wrapping his arms around her tightly. He cried like a baby into her neck, clinging to her as she disappeared.
"It's my fault, If...If I never walked out the door, he wouldn't be.." He bawled. Alex tried her hardest not to cry, but when she saw Peter wailing and crying while he grabbed onto her, silent tears fell down her face as she cradled him.
"No, it's not your fault. Look at me, Peter." He looked up. She took her thumps and wiped the tears from his cheeks. "Whoever did this. It's their fault. Not yours. They'll find whoever did this to him, Peter. I know they will." She consoled.
"Hey! ma'am, you can't be here. You have to go now. This is a crime scene," One of the cops said authoritatively.
"Okay, I was picking him up. Come on, Peter." They both got up from the sidewalk. As Alex guided him to the car, Peter could pick up a few words from the officers behind him.
"There's one other thing. He has a star... tattooed... on his left hand." Once Peter was in the car, he cried and cried and; cried. The only time he stopped was when she needed directions to his house, and only soon after would he start crying again.
When she made it to his house, there were already two police cars outside breaking the news to his Aunt. Alex offered to come inside with him, only to have him reject her. She understood.
She watched as he walked up the stairs and into his house. Alex was able to make it home with a hitch. She climbed back into bed. The girl tossed and turned all night long.
Peter was the only thing on her mind. She knew he wasn't okay.
He was far from okay. After an hour of not being able to fall asleep, she began to cry the way Peter looked at her. He was so broken, lost, and numb, and the thought made tears cascade from her eyes.
At some point in the night, she had fallen asleep. Her pillow was wet from the tears, and her head felt like it was pounding, and she fell asleep with the thought of Peter Parker in her heart and mind.
The following day at school, when Peter came in, all eyes were on him. Everyone would look or glance at him and then start to whisper, and the word of Ben Parker's passing made headlines on the news.
Peter looked around, trying to find Alex. He was the only person he needed or wanted to see, "Hey, Parker." Flash said softly.
"Not today, Flash," Peter mumbled. When Flash placed his hand on Peter's shoulder -he snapped. He quickly grabbed Flash and pushed him against the wall, his feet hanging off the ground.
"It feels better. I'm sorry, Peter. I'm sorry about your Uncle."
"Peter? Peter...Put him down. It's not worth it," Peter looked at Alex, her eyes pleading with him.
When Peter let go of him, Alex ran over and hugged him tightly, almost knocking him off his feet. Peter needed that hug. He needed her. He let his hands rest on the lower part of her back.
Alex Matthews seemed to be the only good thing out of this situation.
