WHEN ALEX MATTHEW'S WAS LAID TO REST, AND THE ONES CLOSEST to her were the ones to attend. It was a beautiful ceremony. That would have been avoided if Peter had played it safe and let her go.Mr. And Mrs. Matthews were heartbroken.
Gwen Stacy was morning the loss of a close friend.
Peter Parker was filled with guilt and a broken heart.
He stared at Alex's freshly dug grave-dirt was still piled on her casket. For the last few weeks, he felt like he couldn't eat, sleep, or do anything the way he used to.
Everything stopped when Alex was gone. He stopped being Spider-Man
He didn't want to do it if she wasn't with him.
She was what kept him going. Gwen's family attended the funeral. This was their second one. Peter was glad it wasn't Gwen. It would have crushed them. When the funeral was over Alex's family thanked everyone for coming.
Peter's Aunt held onto his hand while he gave her a solemn kiss on her forehead before walking off to give him the time he needed. He continued to stare at Alex's headstone.
"I...I'm sorry, Alex. I'm sorry I couldn't save you. If I could take it all back, I would. If I could give my life for yours, I would. You didn't deserve this." His voice broke. Peter felt someone next to him. It was Gwen.
Her eyes were teary and bloodshot. There were no words exchanged between them. All Gwen did was wrap her arms around Peter, hugging him.
He needed it. Gwen didn't bother to ask what happened that night. She didn't want the details. "You can't go on like this, Peter."
He knew that but couldn't bring himself to do anything else. "She wouldn't want you to live your life like this. Frankly, she would be mad at you."
"I...I don't know how to go on without her, Gwen. She was everything to me." Having to speak about Alex in the past tense made his heart drop.
"You don't, Peter. You take her with you. She's never too far. I know you loved her, and trust me when I tell you she was crazy in love with you too." Gwen dug into her pocket and handed him an envelope.
"What's this?"
"She wanted to give it to you the day of graduation, but you broke things off before she got the chance." His hands shook as he looked at the envelope. "Read it. Maybe it'll being you a bit of comfort."
When he arrived home that day. He spent it locked in his room, for hours he started at the pictures of Alex on his phone and listened to her voicemail to him at least 1000 times
He finally plucked up the courage to open the letter and read it:
Dear Peter,
Where do I begin? When my family and I first moved to Queens
I had no intention of calling this place home - or staying here
Long, but then Gwen came along. She made being here bearable. If anything fun, she was intelligent and funny, soon enough she became my best friend, and. I love her like she was my sister.
I love her even more for introducing me to you. Peter Parker, you mean the absolute world to me. You've made me feel things nobody else has. You're the light of my life.
The only person I want to see when I wake up and want to see when I go to sleep. You fight for what's right and protect the people you love including me. I love that you're spiderman. Trust me, I do, but you bring Peter Parker means everything to me.
I fell in love with Peter Parker, not spider-man. I have so much hope for us. We can be together, and hopefully, one day, you could hang up the suit, and we could have a real family. Just you and me
I know you say we can't be together, but who does that work for? Isn't it about time someone saved your life? I know what I signed up for when being your girlfriend, and I don't care
We were meant for each other. Peter Parker, I was enchanted to meet you. I love you forever and always. We made it. We graduated.
Forever yours, Alex
By the end of the letter, Peter was in tears. He only noticed he was crying because the edge of the letter was wet. He cried and cried. He cried until his head hurt.
He cried until he couldn't breathe. Alex was and always would be the love of his life. He couldn't sit around and wish for her to come back because She wasn't coming back. He had to move on with life.
He lost her, and he would have to live with that for the rest of his life. He missed her every single day since her funeral. He didn't care what the weather was like or how bad it was outside he would visit her grave.
He thought about what Gwen said, Take her with you. The act was easier said then done, there were days where he didn't want to get out of bed he didn't want to do anything, there were other days where Aunt May had to force him out of bed.
After her death, Peter was left questioning everything. Why did it happen? What drove Harry to do what he did to himself? Did he deserve to be spider-man?
He stopped being Spider-Man. He didn't know how to be spider-man anymore, he knew he couldn't do it without her.
