"Why can't I get Taylor?"

Her smile pierced right through my tiny heart. After she turned her head towards me, smiling, I saw Taylor slowly look over. His grin didn't disappear but it faded a little as he saw me. In that moment, I tried my hardest to not show any of my hurt or anger.

What is wrong with you?

Taylor lifted his hand and waved from behind Lillian. I forced myself to wave back, as they both made their way across the road.

"Lillian! I see you've met Taylor, my neighbor." I forced the words out, cringing at the word neighbor. They stopped in front of my steps, standing side by side.

"Yep. He was just telling me about the town." She smiled and looked sideways at Taylor. He was standing oddly close to her. In all honesty it made me want to push them apart and rip his head off. But, I was a nice person so I refrained from causing any damage.

"Oh cool!" I smiled, a fake smile.

The three of us stood there for some seconds before Taylor cleared his throat.

"So, I'm having this party at a friends house this weekend. You two wanna come?" He asked, smiling. Instead of looking at me, he glanced at Lillian.

Considering that he was looking at her for an answer, I kept my mouth shut.

"Sure! Ill talk to my mom about staying some nights at Hayles." She said, smiling at him.

I averted my gaze and shifted uncomfortably as Taylor said, "Alright cool," He suddenly looked at me, "You going?"

My eyes landed on him and I pretended to not hear him. "Huh?"

Lillian rolled her eyes and gave him an apologizing look. I avoided her with all my might.

"Are you going Friday?" His eyes were still on mine.

I swallowed, "Yeah, sounds fun."

He smiled and let out a breath, "Great!"

Taylor patted Lillian's shoulder and turned around to head across the road.

As soon as he was out of hearing range I looked at Lillian with narrowed eyes and muttered, "You two were flirting."

"So what if we were?" She rolled her eyes. "He's cute."

My mouth dropped. "You can't possibly-"

"Besides, you've got Chad or whatever his name is. Why can't I get Taylor?" This time she was the one narrowing her eyes.

"Because.." I stopped, my words caught in my throat. I knew I couldn't say I liked Taylor. Hating what I was about to say, I knew I had no choice. "You know what," I smiled as if I had realized something, "You're right. I have Chad."

She nodded and smiled. "Exactly."

We walked back inside to the living room where mom and Aunt Julie were now standing, looking at photos hung on the wall. They were looking at a baby picture of me and Lillian. Her and I both had paint on our faces. She was grinning, standing beside me with a bottle of blue paint. I was sitting beside her, frowning. I remembered that day perfectly.

We were tiny; around 4 years old, the both of us. Mom had decided to visit Aunt Julie for some hours. Eventually Lillian and I got bored so Aunt Julie decided to give us a box of crafts while we were outside. Don't ask me what on earth she was thinking when she did this. I didn't even know. But as soon as she handed it to us, Lillian took it and basically ripped it open.

Inside were scissors, craft paper, glue, and you guessed it; paint. To say we were excited was an understatement. She got ahold of the brown and white paint. I, on the other hand, went for blue and green. After less than 1 minute, our faces were covered in the paints we had grabbed.

Eventually, Lillian began to like the colors on my face and decided she wanted them on her face. Without telling me, she reached over as I was rubbing some more green on my face and snatched the blue. Blue was my favorite color and this wasn't about to fly with me.

My tiny hands then reached for the bottle of blue pant as Aunt Julie stepped outside. "AWWW!" She exclaimed walking towards us, pulling out her flip phone. I let my hands drop and frowned. Of course, by then Lillian was smearing blue paint all over her face and Aunt Julie was taking a picture.

That day wasn't the best, to say the least.

"Haha, I remember that day." Aunt Julie said now, smiling. "You guys had made a mess."

"We sure did." Lillian genuinely smiled, looking at her mom.

They smiled at each other before her mom let out a breath. "Well, I think its time we starte-"

"Actually," I snapped my head towards Lillian, shocked she interrupted her mom. "You see, Hayley has missed me so much and wants to catch up with me. Cousin to cousin. And so do I." Lillian gave her mom pleading eyes as I narrowed mine.

See? She's evil. Lying just to get with Taylor. RIP HER HEAD OFF!

I pushed my evil thoughts aside and payed attention to Aunt Julie's answer.

"Oh honey," She gave us both a sad smile and hugged Lillian, "Of course you can stay. But only until Monday. Okay?"

Before Aunt Julie pulled away, I saw Lillian roll her eyes. I was not surprised one bit. My mom smiled at them then spoke, "I should warn that I will be gone at night, from 9 to 7 in the morning."

Lillian smiled even bigger, "More bonding time for us." She looked at me and I forced a smile. It seemed like that was all I was doing today.

We finally all said our goodbyes and Aunt Julie was on her way. Lillian was busy upstairs while mom and I were in the kitchen.

"Mom," I groaned again for the fourth time.

"Hayley, no more groaning. You will survive." My mom said while stirring some chicken on the stove.

My mom knew Lillian's ways. She told me that Lillian was a smaller version of Aunt Julie. Every time Lillian did something I didn't like or I found unfair, my mom was the first to hear about it. I was beyond shocked that she had let Lillian stay. But all she told me was that Lillian was her niece and it wouldn't hurt for us to try to get along for 4 days.

Little did she know.
