I bit my nail as I sat at the dining table with my phone on speaker. Each ring that wasn't answered gave me more and more anxiety.
Julian was outside. He said he wanted to give me privacy to discuss everything without the feeling of him being overbearing or eavesdropping.
"Kendall?" My mom answered.
"Hey momma" I said softly.
"Is that her? Put the phone down-"
"Craig stop!"
"Sharon it's been almost two years!" My dad said.
"Guys. I can hear you both. Hey dad"
"Hey sugar. Oh gosh. I missed your voice. You sound so grown up now. So mature. Are you safe?" He asked. He was speaking so quick.. like I was going to leave any second and he had no time to say all the things he wanted.
"I'm safe. I'm okay." My eyes welled with tears. The fact my parents didn't hate my guts was almost disappointing.
If they hated me, I wouldn't have to explain myself. To come up with some valid excuse as to why I chose him over them. To find reasons to justify my actions. I wouldn't have to deal with the regret that settled in my heart.
"Good baby, good. And Julian? That's his name?" He asked.
"Yes. Julian."
"How long have you guys been together?" Dad asked.
"Almost a year. Next Thursday is our anniversary."
"Why didn't you call us? When Hayden left?" My mom asked. I sat silently for a second. "Kennie?"
My heart broke. Kennie.
"I'm here. I guess I thought you guys hated me. For leaving. For choosing him over you. And I didn't, and still don't, have any reasons to justify it. I was so sheltered by him. He made me believe I was in love, and I think some part of me was-""Baby. It's okay. We understand. You're young. You seemed so sure. So angry with us, that we didn't want to disrespect your decision by contacting you." Dad said. "Your mom has even kept the same numbers even though we upgraded our phones. We got those little fruit phones the kids are crazy about these days."
"I miss you guys" I said, choking on my own sobs.
"We miss you."
"I have news." I said softly. "Julian and I are getting married. We are planning for a spring wedding."
"WOW! CONGRATULATIONS!" My dad yelled.
"Oh baby. Is he good to you? Is he-"
"Mom. You would love him. He's so good. He's.. he gets me. Hang on let me go get him so you guys can talk." I said grabbing my phone.
"What does he do?" Dad asked.
I couldn't help but laugh, "he runs a company. With his dad" I opened the back door.
"A small business man. That's good!"
"No mom" I chuckled. "Not small. You've seen him in the papers. Julian Hoff. His company actually just founded three homeless shelters in the less fortunate parts of town."
"HOFF?! THE HOFF?!"
Julian smiled at me.
"Hey, darling.""Say hi to my parents" I sat in his lap. "Sharon and Craig."
"Hello, Mr and Mrs-"
"No no. Please sharon and Craig is just fine." My mom interrupted him. "Can I just say, you do inspiring stuff. Like.. very impressive work."
"Thank you. But it's not just me. I have an amazing team and community behind me. And my superstar helps me out a lot." He rubbed my back.
"How'd you two meet? Tell me your love story." My mom said.
Julian and I spared very little, and kinky, details but left nothing else out. Filling my mom and dad in on the drama, the ups, the downs, the high and lows. Every aspect of our lives so far.
"I would love to meet you two before the wedding. Allow me to pay for expenses in driving here. I'll send a driver if you need." Julian said.
"We couldn't ask such a thing! We will come. How does this weekend work?" My mom asked. I could hear paper shuffling around and I knew she had her planner out. She loved planning things. Writing down small details, marking dates with important events, etc.
"This weekend is perfect. I will have Kendall send the address and I insist on covering the cost. We have a guest room here, but if you prefer I have a hotel on standby if you would like your own space."
"You are such a gentleman. If you truly don't mind we will take you up on the guest room."
"Not an issue at all. It'll be ready when you get here. Send Kendall a list of necessities and we will have everything ready. I would love to get to know the two people who raised such an incredible woman." He tucked my hair behind my ear.
"We can't wait to meet you. Kennie, I am so glad you're back. I have missed you very much." Mom said.
"Me too, sugar." Dad chimed in. "We love you endlessly."
"I love you endlessly and more." I smiled.
"Text soon. Bye honey!"
"Bye" I hung up and smiled to Julian.
"Kennie huh?" He chuckled. "I like it."
"Only my mom calls me that. I hate it." I rolled my eyes.
"They sound like such nice people."
"They're saints." I leaned down and kissed him. "Thank you."
"For what, pet?"
"Being so fucking amazing."
"Mm, watch that mouth, pet. I might just have to fuck the naughty out of it." His hands rubbed my thighs. "But, you're welcome. I plan to give you everything you deserve and more. So so so much more."
"You have given me everything I could ever ask for." I pecked his lips. "But about that fucking the naughty out of me. Is that an option or..."
