Today you posted a picture
holding a book
with the caption: "Excited to read this."
And she commented:
"You will love it."
I stayed on the picture longer than I meant to.
There was a version of you I knew
who never understood reading.
Who would rather do anything else
than sit with words you couldn't immediately escape from.
Not even if I loved it.
Not even if I tried to show you
why it mattered to me.
So seeing you like this now
felt strange.
Not wrong.
Just unfamiliar in a way I wasn't prepared for.
I think I should be happy.
That you found something that brings you joy.
Even if I wasn't part of the version of you
who learned to love it.
Even if it was for someone else.
