The Girl with Stars in her Eyes

She was the girl with stars in her eyes.

Not because she was naive,
but because she still looked at the world
like it was something worth believing in.

She loved sunsets at the beach.
Said there was another world hidden beyond them,
someplace untouched by disappointment
or people who only knew how to destroy beautiful things.

I used to laugh softly when she said that.
Now I wonder if she was trying to tell me
she never truly belonged here.

She was the kind of person
who carried entire stories inside her heart
and somehow still made room for mine.

Even on the nights
when her own sadness sat quietly behind her eyes,
she listened to me
Letting  my words carry the weight of my burdens into her heart .

The world was cruel to her.

You could see it
in the way she hesitated before speaking about her dreams,
as if she had already learned
what happens to fragile things once they are placed in careless hands.

Still, she kept dreaming anyway.

She wanted to fly
even after the world clipped her wings
again
and again.

And maybe that is why I loved her.

Not because she was unbroken,
but because she continued searching for light
while carrying so much darkness inside herself.

I think a part of me believed
someone that beautiful could never disappear.

But she did.

She left quietly,
like the tide pulling itself away from the shore,
returning to that distant world
she always spoke about
but none of us could reach.

And now when it rains,
I still look for her in the sky.

I look for the girl with stars in her eyes,
the girl who made suffering seem survivable,
the girl who fought for her dreams
even while the world tried to convince her to stop.

Sometimes I wonder
if I could have loved her better.
If I had held her a little tighter,
listened a little longer,
stayed a little softer—

would she still be here
telling me about the worlds hidden beyond sunsets?

Or was she always meant to leave,
taking the stars with her?
