•Bad Decision•

Later that day, i met with Neteyam to do our daily trainings. We had just finished practicing some sign language and breathing exercises, when we decided to ride our ilu for a little.

"I'm sorry about my brother, he can be a real pain" I finally spoke up glancing at Neteyam for a quick second before looking back at the water, breaking the tense silence that was surrounding us.

i saw Neteyam look up at me, he sighed deeply before speaking, "its fine, it was my brothers fault for throwing the first punch." i finally looked over at him and stared for a while, trying to figure him out.

"How do you do that?" i asked, a
curious and confused look imprinted on my face, my 'eyebrows' scrunched together. he tilted his head in confusion indicating he didn't understand, so i continued.

"how do you make it look so easy to look after your siblings, and prove to your parents you can be a good warrior. a fighter for your people... your sa'lou (family)?" i asked looking deeply in his eyes to find anything that will tell me more about him.

"i don't know, i guess i'm just so afraid to let them down; especially my parents, scared i might disappoint them or wont be good enough for them." Neteyam said honestly, looking over at me. we made eye contact not saying a word, sitting in a comfortable silence, only the sound of water slowly moving with the wind being heard.

i gave him a look of sorrow, understanding exactly what he meant "we should probably get back" i said, finally breaking the contact looking up at the sky then back at him "i have lesson with the young Metkayina children soon" i finished, he nodded his head as we made our way back towards the shore.

Once we got back i climbed onto the Marui's net-like pathways, and turned to see Neteyam also getting on.

"you did great today, your learning quickly Neteyam." i said, staring at him fondly, smiling a little.

"can i ask you something?" Neteyam said suddenly after a brief silence. "yeah of course" i answered softly.

"do you-" he started

our conversation was cut short by one of the children i train pulling on my arm to get my attention. i let out a yelp in shock and looked down to see the young Metkayian boy tugging my arm slightly.

"Y/n come on, we're all waiting for you by the water" he said looking up at me with pleading eyes. "ok, Chi're ill be over in a second" i reassured him, "No please, come now" he begged. i looked over at Neteyam giving him an 'i'm sorry look',  he shook his head with a soft smile on his face telling me it was fine, while Chi're continued to pull me.

we started to walk away when i heard Neteyam's voice again "Y/n?!" he yelled after me. i turned around to him, Chi're stilling trying to pull me away. i looked down at the small child before looking at Neteyam waiting for him to respond.

"Can you meet me back here then? later tonight" He asked nervously, scratching the back of his head, glancing at me with flushed cheeks.

i looked down at Chi're who was still slightly yanking my arm, then back at Neteyam, i smiled, my cheeks heating up slightly.

i felt a weird feeling in my stomach, a good feeling. i looked at Neteyam one more time with a small toothy smile before walking away.
