It was gym class with Coach Finstock himself. Cassie was by Erica the whole time, trying to calm her down. She also requested that she'd be Erica's partner for the rock-climbing wall. Scott and Allison were currently climbing on the wall."You're gonna do great, blondie. Just, try not to look down and pretend it's just you and me in the gym. Nobody else."
"But, what- what if I fall?"
"There's a harness holding onto you and a mat right below you," she comforted, rubbing Erica's shoulder. She smiled nervously at Cassie and she smiled back.
There was a loud laughter coming from the crowd and from Coach. The girls looked at the rock-climbing wall and saw Scott holding his hand to his chest, hanging onto his harness with his body very close to the ground. Then the harness finally gave out and dropped him onto the mat. Cassie looked at Erica and saw that Scott's fall had made her even more nervous.
"It's okay! Everything's gonna be fine!"
"No, everything is not gonna be fine! He almost fell to his death!"
"Yeah, but the harness caught him." Erica gave her a panicked look. "And I'm not helping at all, okay."
They looked back at the situation and saw Coach making fun of Scott for falling.
"Alright! Next two. Williams and Erica, let's go."
Cassie gave her a reassuring look and gently squeezed her shoulder. "You're gonna be okay, Erica."
The girls walked to the rock-climbing wall; Cassie helped Erica with her harness before putting on her own. Cassie climbed up the wall with Erica right by her side. She stopped climbing when she heard Erica hyperventilating.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, Erica look at me, it's gonna be okay, okay?"
"Erica! Dizzy?" Coach asked. "Is it vertigo?"
"Vertigo's a dysfunction of the vestibular system of the inner ear," Lydia commented. "She's just freaking out."
"Erica," he called out again.
"I'm fine," she answered.
"Coach, maybe it's not safe. You know she's epileptic," Allison said.
"Why doesn't anybody tell me this stuff? Erica, you're fine. Just kick of the wall. There's a mat to catch you."
"Erica, look at me," Cassie whispered gently. Erica looked at her with teary eyes. "It's gonna be okay. Just hold my hand as tightly as you can, and we can go down together, okay?" Erica nodded. Cassie held out her hand to her and Erica took it. "Ready? Three...two...one, kick."
The girls kicked off the wall and Erica was gripping onto Cassie's as tight as possible. Cassie didn't mind at all though. They reached the ground and Erica let go of Cassie's hand.
"See, you're fine. You're on the ground," Coach said as an attempt to comfort her while Cassie was unbuckling her harness. "You're alright. Let's go. Shake it off. You're fine."
Just as Cassie was finishing undoing her harness, Erica rushed out the gym.
"Erica..." Cassie rushed after her. Everyone was laughing at Erica for having that kind of reaction. She stopped in her tracks, getting annoyed with the crowd behind her.
She looked up at the ceiling and furrowed her brows when she saw a sprinkler there. She looked back and saw another sprinkler on the ceiling on top of where the laughing crowd was. She looked back in front of her, smirking mischievously when she got an idea.
"Motus," she muttered.
The sprinkler that was above the crowd then started to pour out water. Her smirk grew into a proud grin when she heard the shocked screams of the people behind her.
She took a deep breath trying to contain the amount of proudness she felt in that moment, so she could go find Erica. She was just outside the girls' locker room with her knees to her chest and sobbing. She sat down beside Erica and wrapped her arm around her shoulders.
"That felt so embarrassing," she sobbed.
"I know, and it's okay. Who cares about what all those other people think."
"I do, okay! I care!" She looked up at Cassie who was trying to be as comforting as possible. "I just... want to be alone right now. Is that okay?"
Cassie nodded with a soft smile on her face. "Of course, it is. If you're not ready to talk or not wanting to, I won't force you." She squeezed her shoulder gently before getting up from her sitting position and leaving Erica alone.
--
"So, you were very buddy-buddy with crybaby today," Lydia said.
"Lydia, she's not a crybaby," Cassie defended.
"Oh, come on. She acted like a total wimp going up that wall-"
"Lydia, shut up!" She clenched her fist to try and stop her from doing something she would regret. "I'm sorry," she muttered before getting her stuff from her locker.
As she was closing her locker, her eyes glowed a dark purple for a second before going back to their blue color. She also got a gut feeling that something bad was gonna happen. She ran into the gym and saw Erica on the climbing wall having a seizure. She dropped all of her things and sprinted to the climbing wall. She fell off the climbing wall, but luckily, Scott had caught her just before she could hit the floor.
"Put her on her side, put her on her side," Allison said. "How'd you know? Both of you."
"I just felt it," Scott replied.
"Me too."
--
Cassie was studying, yet again, in her room when she heard the doorbell ring. Knowing damn well that Em wouldn't answer it, she got up from her desk and got the door herself. She opened the door and saw Erica looking happier than before standing there.
"Erica, hey. I thought you were getting checked up on in the hospital."
"Oh, right, yeah. They, uh, discharged me early. So anyways, wanna go shopping with me at the mall?"
She raised an eyebrow at the blonde. "Right now?" She nodded. "But it's almost 9:00?"
"Yeah, well, I've been thinking about that speech you gave me about how being confident in yourself is really important and I decided I wanted to be more confident, so now I'm shopping for a new wardrobe."
Cassie smiled proudly at the girl. "Then in that case, of course I'll go shopping with you. Just let me get dressed up in non-pajama clothes and we'll be ready to go."
--
Three hours later, the girls were at the mall and were having the most fun they've had in a while. Luckily, the mall was twenty-four hours and barely had any people let in the mall. The girls had so many shopping bags, they had to go back outside to the parking lot, put them in the car, and went back inside to do more shopping.
"So, I was thinking about making quite the entrance at school tomorrow, or I guess today since it's midnight, and I was wondering if you'd join me."
"Erica, as much as I love this new side of you, I'm not really sure if I-"
"Oh, come on! You're the one who gave me a speech about confidence that changed me in the first place! Please, I can't do this without you, Cassie."
She eyed the blonde while chuckling. "Ah yes, the good old guilt tripping tactic. It's a good one that I use all the time. It's also one where I always fall for every time, so you are so damn lucky I am your friend, Erica."
The girls giggled at her response while walking back to the car.
"I really am, Cassie."
