~~Flashback~~
The night sky was dark, constellations sprinkled across the vast space whilst you stood guard outside the Viper's headquarters. The sounds of nature both put your mind at ease and filled your stomach with anxiety.
It wasn't even your shift, but you just couldn't bring yourself to walk back into your bunk after what you'd seen; what you felt. It all seemed so real, you were unsure of what to think about it all.
Recalling your nightmare, your grip subconsciously tightened on your gun. You could feel that queasiness in your stomach that you could only compare to those few seconds before one would usually throw up. However, you didn't feel your mouth water or your throat start to burn, so you ignored it.
"Jesus, North. When was last time you slept?" You heard from your right, causing you to jump slightly. You relaxed however when seeing that it was just your senior, Klara Volkova, Viper-1.
Her auburn hair glistened under the harsh lights, her olive green eyes reflecting the small speckles of light in the sky. Each step she took towards you sounded heavy from all of the gear she was wearing. She wore a scarf around her neck that was just a messily-stitched number of fabrics that she never explained the meaning of to anyone.
Though her question was simple, you felt too foolish to answer. You merely shook your head and looked down at your gun before replying.
"Just— just some sleeping problems. I couldn't stand just staring at the ceiling, so I decided to do something that I figured would put me to use." You answered quickly. Though, Volkova didn't seem amused at your blatant lie that she so easily picked up on.
She crossed her arms before quirking a brow, and you refused to look at her.
"Listen, if you don't want say, you can just tell me that. I much rather you be at least a little honest rather than completely lying to me." Volkova's Russian accent was thick, heavy in her r's and h's.
You nodded before turning back to the darkness that was just out of reach of the facility lights. Anything could emerge from the shadows, be it an object or a person. The mere thought is what made you stand straight in anticipation.
"Ahhh, I see how it is. This entire 'Don't anger Viper-1, she's top dog and will have your head on a pike', no?" She asked rhetorically while laughing to herself and pulling her canteen from her utility belt.
She took a swig from it and scrunched her face lightly at the taste of the drink before holding it out to you. Watching Volkova swallow it and still being conscious, you carefully took the canteen from her and hesitantly took a sip.
The sudden taste of alcohol hit you like a truck, and you nearly choked on it before pulling the drinking valve away from your lips. Some of it dribbled down your chin before you tucked your gun under your arm and wiped your face.
A hearty laugh erupted from Volkova before taking her canteen back and placing it back in one of her pouches.
"I probably should have warned you, mysh'. In my hometown, Krasnoyarsk, this is one of best drinks known to us. It is called 'Jewel of Russia'. Very nice under proper circumstances." She spoke while walking to the edge of the platform you were stationed on.
She ran her gloved-fingertips along the metal railing before leaning against it. Volkova seemed at ease; a stark contrast to your ever racing pulse that just wouldn't seem to calm down.
"Price told me good things about you, North." Your senior broke the silence, piquing your curiosity as you walked a few steps closer to her in the hopes that she would elaborate.
