Zak's POV:

The year was 2008.

In the Woodland, there lay 4 kingdoms: Blaze, Diamond, Sugar, and Blossom. Each kingdom had a special tree; the tree that stood out from all the rest.

That special tree was in the middle of every kingdom. That very tree was the color that represented the kingdom. For example, the Diamond kingdom's special tree has blue leaves and the color that represents the Diamond kingdom is blue.

The Blaze kingdom's special tree was a warped tree, the leaves split between the colors of red and blue. The Diamond kingdom's special tree was a willow tree with blue, drooping leaves and blooming white flowers. The Sugar kingdom's special tree was an orange, sugar coated, maple tree. Lastly, the Blossom kingdom's special tree was a tall, pink blossom tree with a mix of white and baby pink flowers.

The special tree of each kingdom would show the kingdom's state.

If the tree was standing tall and strong, that meant the kingdom was healthy and strong. But, if the tree was worn out and weak, that meant the kingdom was falling apart.

Currently, . . . our tree is falling apart.

A guard guarded me from the commotion. Screams of agony flowed through the air, accompanied by shouting and the clings of iron swords. I cried into my mother's chest as she rubbed my lower back, trying not to touch the top. "Shh . . . shh, it's alright," she soothed as her hand caressed my waist.

All I could remember was my wings being chopped off by a Blaze guard. It was the one very moment my mother or any Diamond guards couldn't protect me, a Blaze kingdom guard had snuck up behind me and swung an ax down at my wings, shattering the diamonds and cutting the wings straight from my back.

That had only occurred about thirty minutes ago! The back of my hoodie was stained with blood, the liquid seeping through the fabric. I felt some of the red liquid roll down my back, leaving yet another trail of blood. My wings were now little knobs on my back, covered in blood.

Though the knobs were small, it hurt like Hell. It felt as though two machete's had been stabbed through my back where the start of my wings had been. I didn't know why we were at war; neither did the others. The Blaze kingdom . . . they just started to attack. I knew that my mother and father had been arguing with the rulers of the Blaze kingdom, but I never thought it would come to . . . this.

I peeked over my mothers shoulder, watching one of the last Diamond guards battle with a Blaze guard. The Diamond guard threw their sword down at the Blaze guard, slicing through their cheek as the sword dragged down all the way to their chest. The Blaze guard only had a cut on their cheek and a tiny one on their chin since the steel armor protected their chest from sharp blades like the Diamond guards sword. The Blaze guard turns to their side, swinging their sword and arm quickly at the Diamond guard, knocking them over. The Diamond guard plummeted to the ground, clouds of dust flaring up into the air.

The Diamond guard looked up, unable to get up before the Blaze guard took action again, throwing themselves onto the Diamond guard. The two fought, surrounded by dead guards, most being from the Diamond kingdom. The dirt was stained with fresh, red blood. The air reeked of death and the smell of blood contaminated the air with a coppery, iron-like scent. I watched as the Blaze guard jabbed their sword into the Diamond guards throat, quickly ripping it out as they dug their fist into the wound. Their hand was painted with blood, the Blaze guard pulling at whatever they could find in the Diamond guards throat. That was it, the Diamond guard was dead, leaving only one left. My father was already dead, and my gut told me my mother would be soon too.

The Blaze guard got off the Diamond guard, staring at the guard in front of me and my mother with cold eyes. All of the sudden, a sword that had been thrown by a different Blaze guard, hit the guard guarding me and my mother from danger. The sword stabbed through their stomach, blood spewing everywhere. Some got on my cheek. The guard fell to the ground with dull, lifeless eyes, dropping both their shield and sword. A small dust cloud erupted into the air. I only cried harder, tears streaming down my face and under my chin, rolling down my neck. Some of the tears rolled onto my lips, letting me get a taste of that salty, clear water. Why were they doing this? Did they want our diamonds — or the ones that were in our skin?

I was only eight. I reminisced in happy memories with family and friends, all days before all of this happened. I looked up at my mother. Her eyes were filled with sorrow and tears. I knew this would be my last time seeing her. She wiped the tears emerging from my eyes with her thumb. An iron sword came from behind her and up to her neck. "Any last words?" I heard a Blaze kingdom guard ask. I watched another tear run down her face before she said, "I love you and always will." She hugged me, squeezing me tight before whispering in my ear.

"Run and don't stop running." She let go of me, smiling at me whilst another tear rolled down her cheek. I backed away a few steps. I watched the guard as they slit her throat with the sword. Blood stained the guards sword. Her eyes faded as she fell to the ground before me.

My eyes welled up with even tears as I dropped to my knees, crying at my mothers body. As I sobbed, I felt a sharp point touch on my forehead. I looked up, my eyes glistening with tears. The guard's blood covered, iron sword lay on my forehead. I wanted to run. I wanted to get away.

"Run and don't stop running." The words replayed in my head as I stared at the guard. I slowly stood up, the guards eyes watching me intently. I shoved the guard to the floor before they could do anything, and quickly darted off. I ran faster than I have ever ran before. I didn't want to end up like the others.
