Chapter 26

Wednesday, 9:00 am

In the bunker

Katie's POV

I'm in the library, being forced to do school work, when I'd much rather be asleep. I would much rather be in my bed than have to deal with Science class. This is stupid. I hate this. I like home schooling, but I'd have liked to start a little later in the day. Not at 9 in the fucking morning.

Dad: Focus, Katie.

What do think I'm trying to do? I'm trying, not really hard, but still trying, to focus. And you wanna come at me with "Focus, Katie"?

Katie: What do you think I'm doing?

Dad: Not focusing.

Katie: I'm trying.

Dad: Well you're gonna have to try a little harder.

Katie: I can't.

Dad: Why not?

Katie: Because this is boring. I can't focus on something that's boring.

Dad: What can I do to make it less boring, so that you can actually focus?

You can do it for me. That'd be great. And it would save me a lot of frustration.

Katie: You can do it for me.

Dad: Nice try. Not gonna happen.

Katie: Fine. Then let me take a break.

Dad: You haven't even been working for an hour. You started 15 minutes ago, Katie.

Katie: Yeah. And I need a break.

Dad: No. You're not taking a break, right now. You can take a break after you've been working for at least a few hours. Like after lunch. You can take a break after lunch.

AFTER LUNCH?! THAT'S LIKE A MILLION HOURS FROM NOW! I WON'T LAST THAT LONG! I MIGHT ACTUALLY DIE OF BOREDOM BEFORE THEN! DO YOU WANT ME TO DIE OF BOREDOM?! BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE YOU WANT ME TO DIE OF BOREDOM!

Katie: After lunch?

Dad: Yeah. After lunch. That's 3 hours from now. I want you to work for 3 hours, and then you can take a break.

Katie: That's stupid.

Dad: Hey. He warns.

Katie: Hey. I mock him.

Dad: We're not doing this, this morning, Katie.

Katie: We're not doing this, this morning, Katie. I mock him again.

Dad: Katelyn Grace, I'm not playing this game right now. It's time to be serious, and do your school work. I'm not doing this whole attitude thing, right now.

Well I'm not in the mood for this shit. I just wanna take a break, but you're being a dick. This is literally child labor. And I AM NOT going to stand for child labor. I get up from my chair and start leaving the room. You're not gonna tell me when I can and can't take breaks. I'll make that decision on my own. Thank you.
