Delilah wasn't a stranger to breakups.

She had been in relationships before.

There was sweet John McClaren ( I strongly believe that TABILB and TSITP all take place in the same universe) who she dated for around 7 months during her freshman year.

There was beautiful, charming Mike Rudolph from the 8th grade. And then there was Tristan Miller who she had a short fling with last summer.

And now there was Evan Davis. I guess she couldn't count what Evan and she had as anything but a very short fling. She liked Evan, she did. He was sweet and he treated her well.

But no one was ever going to come close to how much she felt for Jeremiah Fisher.

Unfortunately.

Delilah and Cam Cameron eventually found themselves sitting by the edge of the beach, close enough for the waves to crash onto the shore and reach their legs a little but not close enough to soak them completely.

Delilah explained the whole thing, what happened between her and Evan, how she had a growing suspicion the whole day that the two of them were mad at each other, how her non-existent summer crush on Jeremiah was growing to become not so non-existent.

Cam Cameron was a very good listener. The boy sat beside her and listened silently, nodding his head now and then but never speaking up.

The both of them currently sat in silence once Delilah finished her ramble, watching the waves move back and forth.

"I just don't understand." Cam finally said. Delilah faced him as she laid her head on her knees.

"Don't understand what?"

"From the sound of it, you've been in love with Jeremiah your whole life. You guys have been best friends since you were kids and you've kept your feelings from him for so long. Del correct me if I'm wrong but you're the kind of person who knows what she wants and goes for it right?" Cam raised a brow.

"Well- to a certain extent-"

"And also correct me if I'm wrong but Jeremiah has always looked out for you in a way he never has for Belly. Not that I'm saying he doesn't look out for her but he treats you special, don't tell me he doesn't,'' Cam said with a pointed stare.

Delilah's face burned. He was right.

No matter how many times Delilah pretended not to notice, Jeremiah always had a soft spot for her; anyone with eyes could see it.  Delilah just always brushed it off because they were best friends.

"Del why haven't you just told him?" Cam frowned softly.

"Because it could ruin everything, okay? Jeremiah and this family are the one thing in my life that is fully mine, that I know will never change, and that I feel I have some control over. Jeremiah had always been my best friend,  this one little thing can cause all of it to go up in flames. Okay? I can't lose him, Jeremiah is the one thing I cannot lose.'' Delilah said.

Cam was silent as she continued.

"I lost my mom when I was just a few years old. I lost her and that was out of my control. I always thought if I somehow figured out she was sick sooner, that could've I don't know. Helped her? I mean I was a kid, what could I possibly have done? I couldn't control my mom's death, but I can control this." Delilah sighed.

Control. That was something Delilah struggled with. Feeling out of control with her feelings, feeling as if she had no control. It terrified her.

But being friends with Jeremiah was something she indeed could control, and she wasn't going to let that slip away. Delilah was willing to wait for it, it was the one thing in life she could control.
