TRIGGER WARNING !!: mention of cancer and death
Delilah couldn't stop fidgeting.
The whole car ride, young 5-year-old Delilah had been a ball of excitement. Ever since her father had told her brother and her he had gotten a beach house for them to spend every summer at she couldn't contain her excitement.
"Are we there yet?" Delilah squeaked for probably the 10th time that day. From beside her, six-year-old Liam Collins groaned.
"Del stop asking!"
"But we've been driving forever!"
Peter Collins watched his two kids bicker from the rearview mirror and smiled to himself. This was what he wanted from getting the house, for the kids to get out and make new memories, t have fun. To smile.
Losing their mother was rough and all-around confusing for the two kids.
One moment Rosabelle Collins was still laughing, sipping wine in the living room while she slow danced with her husband, their two kids watching them from the couch.
Trigger warning starts
The next moment she was incredibly sick, her life deteriorating before her eyes. Peter and Rosabelle had been prepared for this since a year ago when they had gotten her diagnosis.
Peter would bring the kids to see their mother almost every day, and Rosabelle would promise them each time that she would bring them out to the beach soon.
When the time came to say goodbye, Liam, Peter, and Delilah were in their mom's hospital room.
Rosabelle lay on the bed with her two kids lying beside her, they didn't understand that at that moment was taking her last breaths. They just thought she was taking a nap.
Peter sat next to the bed, tears shamelessly streaming down his face as he watched Rosabelle fight the endless slumber.
Rosabelle reached over and Peter grabbed her frail hand, but Rose smiled at him nonetheless.
"Look at you, handsome as always." she smiled weakly.
"And you are as divine as ever" Peter whispered shakily.
"You make sure they keep smiling ok? I know you can do it, make sure you take them to the beach. I don't want them to think I broke my promises." Rose whispered.
"I promise.'
Rose smiled and her eyes fluttered shut.
The funeral was a blur for the Collins kids, they didn't truly understand that their mother was dead. They knew she was around anymore, but to them at that age, it was more like she fell asleep for a very long time.
trigger warning ends
When Peter decided to buy the beach house, he showed his kids and asked "what you guys say if we go there every summer?" the two kids screamed in excitement and Peter bought it in an instant.
Back to the present day, Peter shook his head fondly as his two beautiful kids continued to bicker in the back seat.
"Del, we're finally here."
The man pulled the land rover into the street and there it was. The house was gorgeous. Tall with a dock out back and a backyard swimming pool. The kids climbed up to get a better look as Peter pulled their car into the park.
"Ok get out of the car ya knuckleheads" Peter chuckled and the kids tumbled out of the car. They grabbed their suitcases and swimming floaties from the trunk and Peter unlocked the door.
