"School is going good." You smiled as you talked into the phone. Classes had started a week ago, and your father liked to call every other day to see how things were going.
"That's good, sweety. Make any new friends? Eating well?" Your father asked.
"Just Vivi so far. She works in the cafe with me. And of course I'm eating well, I am dating Ace." You chuckled. You didn't eat every meal with Ace, but you two would get a bite to eat after classes.
"He's treating you well, right?" Your father was happy to hear you two were finally together. He just like everyone else had been waiting for you two to get together forever. That didn't stop him from giving the boy a stern talking to over the phone.
"Of course he is." You grabbed your laptop and stuffed it into your backpack along with a notebook. "I gotta get to class. I'll talk to you later. I love you."
"I love you too. Have a good day, sweetie." Your father said his goodbyes and both hing up the phone.
You grabbed your bag and slipped a pair of sneakers on. You said goodbye to Nami, who had gotten back from her morning classes not too long ago and left your dorm. You put your headphones on and hummed along to your music as you walked down the hall. There were a few students milling about in the common area when you got to the ground floor.
You pushed open the door, immediately landing in something wet as you tripped over something. You cursed and looked down at your hands only to scream when you noticed you were sitting in a puddle of blood.
The students in the common area came out when they heard your screaming. They let out their own gasps and screams. You looked back to see what you had tripped over, and you were horrified to see a lifeless body lying in front of the doors. They were stripped down to their underwear, barbwire tied around their arms and legs. What horrified you the most was the nails hammered into their face.
"Are you okay?" One of the students came over and helped you out of the blood puddle. You didn't say anything. Shock was running through your system, and you could feel the bile rising in your throat.
Everything seemed to blur together after that. One of the students had called the cops. The cops arriving caused most students to come out of their dorms to see what was going on. The area was taped off and people were told to go back to their dorms. Except for you and the students that first stumbled across the body.
You were talking with a detective named Smoker. His white hair was slicked back and he frowned around the cigar in his mouth as you didn't reply to any of his questions. If you could hear you would answer him, but right now, it just sounded like rushing water in your ears.
A commotion caught your ears, and you turned your head to see Ace arguing with two cops while pointing at you. Smoker noticed you perk up a little and told the two cops to let him through.
"Oh, God. (Y/N) what happened?" Ace's voice was laced with concern as he saw the blood covering your pants. He didn't care and pulled you into a tight hug. You gladly snuggled closer to his warm body, feeling safe in his arms.
"And you are?" Smoker asked as he stared at Ace.
"I'm Ace, her boyfriend. What happened?"
"Your girlfriend quite literally tripped over a dead body." Amoker pointed over his shoulder to the bloodied sidewalk. The body had already been looked over by crime scene investigators and since then been removed from the area. "I've been trying to ask Miss. (Y/N) some questions. She seems to be in shock, though. She hasn't made a peep. You might want to take her to a hospital to get checked out."
"No, no. I'm good." You mumbled against Ace's chest. Your breath coming out in short shallow pants.
Smoker asked his questions over again. There wasn't much for you to tell him, though. With all the nails in the victims face, you couldn't tell if you've seen them around campus or not. And you didn't notice any unusual people around the area. Smoker wrote down everything you said and handed you his card in case you remembered anything.
Ace walked with you up to your dorm. You were in need of a shower. Your pants and sneakers would be tossed out. They were covered in too much blood to be washed, and even you could, you didn't want to keep clothes that were soaked in someone else's blood.
"Hmm, what's that?" Taped to your door was an envelope with your name on it. You peeled it off your door and opened it up. You were shocked to find a letter that looked like it was written in dried blood. It read:
You're the air that fills my lungs.
You're the light that lights up my world.
Your presence puts me at ease.
I see it in our future, WE WILL BE TOGETHER.You also found a picture of yourself in the envelope. It was taken through the window of the cafe, a smile on your face as you handed a customer their coffee. Fear started to flow through your body. You had been watched and photographed without even knowing it. You could be being watched this very moment. You reached for your dorm door, wanting to go in and hide away from the world. You were stopped by Ace grabbing your wrist.
"The person who sent this could be in there. Let's call Detective Smoker." Ace suggested. You shuddered at the thought of someone else other than yourself or Nami being in your dorm. You handed Smoker's card to Ace, and he dialed the man's number. Luckily, Smoker hadn't left yet.
"Let's see this letter." Smoker said once he was outside your dorm with you and Ace. You gave him the letter, and he read it over before putting it into an evidence bag he had brought with him. He then asked for your dorm key while pulling his gun out of his holster.
"My roommate Nami should be in there." You told him before he unlocked your door. You couldn't help but worry that your orange haired friend could be in trouble if the creep who sent you the letter had decided to enter your dorm.
Smoker nodded and unlocked your door. He crept quietly into your dorm while you and Ace waited outside for him to give the all clear. He did startle Nami when he checked her room. You were glad to know your friend was unharmed.
"You two can come in. It's safe." Smoker came back over to the door. Even though he said it was safe, you still walked cautiously into your dorm.
"What's going on? I heard someone found a body..." Nami's eyes nearly bulged out of her head as she saw your blood soaked pants.
"Yes, a body was found outside this dorm building. Your friend here also received an anonymous letter. Did you happen to see anyone unusual hanging around your dorm?" Smoker asked Nami.
"No. I was on my way out to get lunch when people said a body was found and that we had to stay inside. I didn't see anyone outside our dorm." Nami replied.
"Hmm, I see. This person must have waited until everyone was in their dorms before sticking the letter to your door." You didn't miss the way Smoker almost said killer instead of person. He didn't have to say it, though. It was a pretty big coincidence receiving a stalker letter the same day a dead person was found.
"So, what do we do?" Ace asked.
"For now, you better keep your windows and door locked. There will be officers posted on and around campus. And don't go anywhere alone." Smoker gave you a pointed look, and you nodded in response. "Do you by any chance have any idea who might be stalking you?"
"No idea. This is my first year of university, and I haven't met many people." You told him.
"Okay. Well, you have my number if anything comes up. And stay safe kids." Smoker said before leaving.
You sighed and made your way into the bathroom, ready to scrub yourself clean. You spent what felt like hours in the shower. Each time you thought you were clean and rinsed off, you noticed more pinky water flowing down the drain. You scrubbed yourself head to toe at least five times before hopping out of the shower.
You dried off and put on your clean clothes. You left the bathroom to find Ace sitting on the couch going through his phone.
"What are you looking at?" You sat down next to him and rested your head on his shoulder.
"The school sent an email. There's no classes for a week." Ace laid back on the couch and dragged you down with him.
"That's great. I want to sleep and forget about this day." You sighed. You nuzzled your head into the crook of his neck and shut your eyes.
"Sleep sounds good." Ace mumbled and wrapped his arms around your waist.
