(Y/N)'s POV

The ball was only a few days away and most people had put themselves down to stay over the Christmas holiday for obvious reasons. Hemione warmed up to me for the next few days, the awkwardness between us all but forgotten, mainly so she could stop arguing with Ron.

As a passing group of girls spoke to me in French, asking for directions I answered and we moved on, but it did lead to an interesting conversation topic that I had forgotten to mention to her, or anyone really. "Since when do you speak French?"

"About two weeks ago" I pointed to a group of Beauxbatons girls who were dreamily staring at Cedric Diggory. "I may have borrowed a few thoughts, and conversational French, with permission of course." "so, I could help them if I need to, like in the forest"

"That's actually really impressive" she said in shock. "Would you expect anything less?" I raised an eyebrow, coyly waving to the girls who all let out a giggle, "Not that it's been much of a help, none of them have even asked me, consorting with the enemy I suppose"

She paused and her smile faltered a little "Wait, so did you use your ability to learn French so you could help them, or so they could ask you to the Yule Ball?" I smiled widely at her, "Yes." she let out an exasperated sigh.

She huffed at me as I told her not to worry about my date to the Ball "I could be one of those people who goes alone and pretends not to care" I argued, she assured me that I wouldn't have to.

I chuckled "doesn't matter though at this point I'm probably taking Neville" I said jokingly, but I got an answer I didn't expect, "You can't, he's going with Ginny, she told me after he asked me" I was shocked "NOOO! That's my backup plan going with my backup-backup plan!" I decided it was best to try the only person I could think of who might want to go with me.

Unfortunately I couldn't find Luna if you paid me to, but that was fine, I'd ask her next time I saw her, even more unfortunately I walked into the common room just in time to witness one of the most awkward things I'd ever seen.

I found Ron slouched in a corner, nearly in the fetal position, everyone surrounding him trying to pry answers out of him "What's up, Ron?" said Harry, joining us. Ron looked up at Harry, a sort of blind horror in his face.

"Why did I do it?" he said wildly. "I don't know what made me do it!" "What?" said Harry. "He — er — just asked Fleur Delacour to go to the ball with him," said Ginny. She looked as though she was fighting back a smile, but she kept patting Ron's arm sympathetically.

I couldn't help but laugh, "Good idea, aim for the stars, work your way dawn" I commented, Ginny had to cover her mouth to stop from giggling. "You what?" said Harry. "I don't know what made me do it!" Ron gasped again.

"What was I playing at? There were people — all around — I've gone mad — everyone watching! I was just walking past her in the entrance hall — she was standing there talking to Diggory — and it sort of came over me — and I asked her!" he trailed off there "And? C'mon the suspense is killing me!"

He looked up at me with wide vacant eyes, "She looked at me like I was a sea slug or something. Didn't even answer. And then — I dunno — I just sort of came to my senses and ran for it." For some reason this really ticked me off, why would she look down on him like that? As Harry explained to Ron that she was part Veela, I went and confronted her.

What I expected was some prissy French rich girl who couldn't care less about anyone around her, this is not what I found. Instead I found her in the library, quietly reading a book, on her own, not surrounded by her entourage as I had imagined, honestly, she seemed a bit lonely.
