Hermione's POV
"I wouldn't worry Hermione, the prat's probably inside the hall gloating about his victory by now" said Ron, trying to comfort me, but that was easy for him to say and a part of me wanted to tell him to shut up.
Harry gave the password to enter the hall and the crowds of people quickly pulled us inside. As Ron rushed over to his family, who welcomed him joyously, I looked for a familiar face in the room.
I scanned the faces of the crowd, my heart sinking with each that was not his. I half-heartedly shuffled along after Ron, distracted by my search, I was just considering doing what I dreaded to think about and begin checking the bodies when I was nearly knocked off my feet.
(Y/N) had hobbled over to me, the white shirt of his school uniform now torn and bloody, he pulled me into a tight hug, lifting me off my feet for a second, then he doubled over slightly, groaning and holding an injury.
I lifted his chin so I could see his eyes. They were teary, but I only saw them for a second. He pulled me into another embrace, "I was so worried..." he said quietly into my hair. I shed a few tears myself in the moment.
He pulled Ron into a hug too, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" he kept muttering as he pulled Harry into a shaky hug. "For what?" said Ron, looking a bit frazzled. "I shouldn't have gone. I should have stayed with-"
"Don't be silly," said Ron shaking his head, "Of course you'd want a crack at him, it's normal 'innit" he said, for some reason (Y/N) seemed greatly relieved by those words, stuttering and nodding as Harry ran off to god knows where.
(Y/N) tried to say something a few times, but didn't get the word out, but then grit his teeth and let out a small voice that filled me with dread. "Tonks...and Lupin..." he didn't need to say more, the quiet tone in his voice told us all we needed to know.
With tears welling in his eyes, he pointed to two bodies across the hall. I didn't need to approach them to know why. Instead I found myself holding him tightly, as if he'd fade away if I weren't connected to him.
Ron was speechless, but turned away from the two of us so would see no tears, I cried into (Y/N)'s chest and he did the same as Ron and tried his best to contain tears, but eventually gave in. Then we sat in silence for a few moments, each of us processing the horrible news.
To take our mind off of it, remembering Ron saying something about (Y/N) gloating earlier, I tried to squeeze the story out of him, give us all something positive to think about, but he seemed reluctant to tell, so I asked indirectly.
"What happened to you, you're covered in blood!" I said, looking at the slash in his uniform. "Despite common misconceptions, turns out I'm not invincible" he laughed as he traced the bloody bandage with his wand to clean it. Then flinched at the new pain.
He seemed eager to change the topic too, "So...I got my snake, you get yours?" he asked as Ron took a seat next to us on a bench near the other Weasleys, who had just shared a collective hug and were sitting together.
We shook our heads. He kissed his teeth, "Shame, but at least we know it's near the castle." "Don't change the subject!" I insisted, he sighed and his eyes sparked with inspiration.
"I'm not! But did I mention that-" he smiled at me, "Bones is pregnant!" then he frowned for a second "Crookshanks is the daddy" he grabbed both my wrists and held them up as if we were cheering. "So...yaaay!"
I frowned at him and he must have given up on sugar coating it. "Fine but you can't be mad at me." Him saying that just made me madder, I glowered at him until he caved. "I may have been, slightly...lightly...mildly...stabbed" he said quietly, averting his eyes.
