When we are little
We are taught that
Teasing is the equivalent of a crush.
"He's only mean to you
Because he likes you."When we are teenagers,
We are drawn to the players
And the bad boys
With equally bad intentions.
Yet still we are told,
"He only calls you a bitch
Because he likes you."When we are older,
And bad boys become bad men,
We take these lessons with us.
We mistake violence for acts of love,
And learn to deal with the pain.Yet you wonder why we act confused
When you sit and ask us
Why on earth we would dare
Take such abuse. For we look in the mirror,
And regard our bruises as being pretty.
It was you who taught us to believe,
"I thought he was only teasing."
