We are told stories of monsters
That live under our bed;
Never warned of the demons
That reside in one's head.

The banality of evil is something
We are taught to ignore;
Tricked into believing
We are somehow safe
Behind locks and closed doors.

We place villains on pedestals
As we run to our friends;
But in dehumanising our enemies
We are guaranteed to
Meet bitter ends.

Fearing shadows and legends,
We never question
Our neighbours.
But ignoring the faults
In our society
Is a mistake we are doomed
To regret later.

For it is hard on our hearts
To accept the blame;
To recognise that
All monsters are human;
Villains and heroes—
One and the same.

It is an explanation
Too often ignored,
Yet remains
Perfectly clear:
We belong to
The same species
As the villains,
The murderers,
And the tyrants we fear.

But we love to hide
From the truth,
To run from the
Horrid things we see;
For the scariest thing
About monsters
Is that they are just like
You and me.
