As she opened her eyes everything started spinning. Her head was throbbing. What happened last night? Where was she? She sat up and looked around. She was in a very comfortable bed, she was dressed. Mike. Mike's place. Now she started remembering. She had come her last night after Landon's mom blamed her for his death and slapped her. She started doing tequila shots. She doesn't even know how many she had. She heard clanking from downstairs. She got up and went to the kitchen. There she found a shirtless Mike with his hair wet just out of the shower.
"Good morning." She said.
"Oh, good morning. How did you sleep?" He said, handing her a glass of orange juice and two aspirins. "For your head." And gave her a quick kiss.
"Well, your bed is very comfortable. Mike, did we... last night?"
"Of course not! I'm even offended you might think that. How could I take advantage of you that way? We just slept together. I was going to sleep on the couch, but you said you didn't want to be alone and asked me if I could stay with you. We were fully dressed the whole time. Which reminds me." He noticed his bare chest. He walked through a door and came back putting on a white shirt.
"I'm sorry for even asking. Thank you for taking care of me." She smiled at him.
"Here, I made you some breakfast. You're going to need the energy. By the way, your purse has been buzzing."
As he set the table she walked to her purse and took out her phone. She had 15 missed calls and 7 messages from Patrice, 2 missed calls from her mother and a missed call from Landon's house. She looked through all the voicemails until she found the one from Landon's house. "Alice, this is Laura. I'm calling to apologize for my behavior yesterday. I should've not done that in front of everyone. I still think that in some way you are to blame for what happened to my Landon but I'm a Christian and we should forget. You are welcome to the funeral tonight and to the burial on Sunday. Good bye."
"Everything okay?" Mike asked as she hung up.
"That was Landon's mom. She apologized for her behavior yesterday. Still blames me though, but that I'm invited to the funeral and burial." She looked through her phone and called Patrice.
"Hello? Where are you?" Patrice said furious.
"Sorry, I stayed over at Mike's last night."
"And you couldn't call and let me know? Here I heard that Landon went and killed himself and then you went and disappeared."
"Sorry, Patrice. After the day I had, I didn't feel like dealing with anybody."
"Except with Mike apparently." She said sarcastically.
"Don't start. I'll see you later." She hung up. She would call her mother later. Breakfast was getting cold.
"Problem?" Mike asked as she sat down.
"My roommate sometimes thinks she's my mother. She was worried I didn't report myself yesterday."
"You have to let her know where you are? How old are you again?"
"We've been roommates for four years, she's a really good friend. She just worries. She doesn't know you."
"That will change someday. But for now I'm only yours, we are still getting to know each other."
"Oh, I understand." She said as she ate her breakfast. After she was done her phone started vibrating again. I was her mom. "Hello?"
"Where are you? Where did you spend the night? And don't say at the dorm because Patrice has been looking for you."
"Good morning, mom. I stayed at a friend's house last night." She said walking into the living room.
"You don't have any friends."
"Mom! It's a new friend."
"Is it a guy? So what Laura said yesterday was true? You're sleeping around? Alice Fletcher!"
"No mom, I'm not sleeping around. You know me better than that. I'll talk to you later."
"Wait! I was also calling you to tell you we will be picking you and Patrice up around six to go to the funeral. Do you think you will be back at the dorm around that time?"
"Yes, mom. I'll be ready, good bye." She turned around as she hung up and saw Mike staring at her.
"So, I'm a friend now?" He said walking towards her.
"It's my parents. If I tell them, they're going to want to meet you. And it's too soon, like you said. We are still getting to know each other. I don't want them all in my business. Can I take a quick shower?" She said raising her arms and putting them around his neck.
"Sure. There's fresh towels in the closet." He said, giving her a quick peck. "I would offer my company tonight, but I don't think it would seem right for you to take your new boyfriend to your ex-boyfriend's funeral. We wouldn't want people talking and making you uncomfortable. Just know I'll be there in spirit and if anything happens and you think you need to get out of there just call me and I'll go pick you up, okay?"
"Thank you, I really appreciate it."
