She woke up so happy the next day. She finally was able to sleep all through the night. It was Saturday, so she didn't have to go to the office and Mike was coming. Her phone vibrated and it was Patrice. She hadn't spoken to her since she left. "Hello?" She answered, getting up.
"Oh my God, girl. I am so sorry. But between therapy and trying to get used to being back here I haven't even had time to breathe. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me, I've been a bad friend."
"No, I understand. So much has happened that I haven't had time to think."
"Tell me everything. Last I heard your dad admitted to doing horrible things. I bet it was hard for you guys."
"So hard, specially my mother forgiving him. We lost all out money, the house, the cars. I got fired because of it."
"Are you staying with family?"
"No, no one wanted anything to do with us. So we had to go live in this horrible dump in the really bad part of town. I got sexually harassed by the owner of the place. He said I had to pay him somehow for us living there."
"What? That's horrible. What did you do?"
"Nothing! The best thing happened yesterday. An old client of my dad's felt bad and offered us one of his properties. It's a nice apartment, and the guy got raided by the police and arrested. Apparently he was a drug dealer."
"So much has happened to you. I noticed you didn't mention Mike in all this, what happened?"
"Nothing happened. We are still very much together. He's returning today!" She said excitedly.
"He's been gone all this time? While you've been going through so much? The least he could've done is offer you his place while he was gone."
"I'm sure if I would've asked he would've told me to stay there. He still wants us to move in together."
"You shouldn't have to ask, Alice. If he really cared he would've offered."
"Patrice, not this again, please. Don't ruin my mood. I'm happy because I got to hear from you and he's coming back today. Plus, he's been going through a lot with his mother over there. I know he cares, he offered to wire me money."
"Okay, I'll drop it. I'm just saying. What are you doing for money? Don't depend on him for that."
"I didn't take his money. My uncle got me my job back at the newspaper and they just got my dad a job as a janitor. My mother is also thinking about getting her job back at the university."
"Wow, it's been so long since she did that. I'm glad things are working out after everything that happened. I have to go, my mother is calling me."
"Okay, it was so nice to hear from you, I missed you. Say hi to your mom."
"I will, bye."
After she hung up she tried calling Mike. She couldn't reach him the night before to tell him the great news and everything that happened, plus he hadn't given her an hour of when he would be back in town. His phone went straight to voicemail, she got excited, he must be on the plane already. She distracted herself the rest of the day organizing her room.
