you had unlocked the door to your shared apartment at 3:16 in the morning, when you saw the lights in the being off you made sure to tiptoe around the apartment, trying to not make any loud sound before you hop in the shower as quietly as possible. doing the same thing as you get ready for bed as silent as anything, before making your way to the bedroom.

"ning?" you muttered in mild surprise, expecting to see ningning laying on the bed sleeping peacefully but instead, she had her phone in her hands and it seems like she was monitoring their latest reality show.

"you're not asleep yet, honey?" you asked as you slowly make your way towards the bed.

"how can i" she said in a short, sarcastic tone. her jaw was visibly tightened as she turn her phone off before placing it under her pillow, turning off the lamp as she lay down.

you stood there for a moment, you were about to get under the covers but the atmosphere in the room felt cold. the sight of ningning curled up with her back towards you hurts you in a way. you could feel, and you know that she's been feeling distant with you because of how often you come home late from hanging out with your friends. you called for her but was answered by the silent sadness fizzling in the air. you knew you messed up but you were so, so tired.

you slowly crawl into her side of the bed, as you gently tugged the covers over you and ningning, not saying a word. you did not want to speak due to the atmosphere that was killing you but you felt like you owed her at least a simple sorry.

"i'm sorry" you broke the silence

"that's the fifth time you said that this week. or is it?" you could hear the tiredness in her voice, she was clearly tired too. not only you. she's so tired of your empty promises of coming home early and your apologies. you had let her down too many times, she doesn't feel anything anymore when she hear the same meaningless words coming out of you.

you replied with silence, you knew you had nothing else to say and you thought it would be better not to say anything at all. at this moment all you could think of is to just sleep. sleep so that when the both of you wake up tomorrow everything will be forgotten. you'll wake up to making more empty promises and ningning waking up to believing more empty promises.

though being so tired, you couldn't fall asleep. same goes to the girl next to you. you close your eyes and ignored the sniffles coming from ningning. it was a long night for both of you. having to ignore the not so silent tears ningning is letting out was a torture to you. but you were tired. and while she was only a couple of inches away from you, she could have never felt farther away.
