James came to the city to work and temporarily stayed at his brother's house. He repaired bicycles and set up a car repair shop downstairs. James was a simple, loyal person who was willing to help others and had a warm heart for everyone.
On the second floor lived Louie, the captain of the City Bureau of Industry and Commerce Inspection Brigade. The two of them, upstairs and downstairs, had dealings with each other. Besides, Louie was a classmate of James's brother and a very good friend. Gradually, James became familiar with Captain Louie, and their relationship became very good.
One day, as James was repairing a car, he noticed two young, fashionably dressed men downstairs. They wore sunglasses and looked like they were up to no good. James wondered if they were thieves who had come to "case the joint."
He pretended not to see them and continued to repair the car, occasionally glancing at them to see what they were up to. Suddenly, he heard them whispering, "Not bad, this is the building, just can't figure out which unit...." Then one of them said, "The boss said we must be accurate and can't make a mistake. Hey, how about we ask the car repair...?"
They approached James and asked, "Hey, could you tell us where Louie captain lives?"
James's heart skipped a beat when he heard this. He thought, "Could it be that Captain Louie's enemies have hired mobsters to seek revenge? I must protect him!" So, he pretended to be indifferent while repairing the car and said, "Louie captain originally lived upstairs, but he moved away three days ago...."
"Moved away? Where did he move?" one of them asked impatiently.
"I heard he moved to B district, but I don't know which building or unit," James said seriously.
The two men looked at each other and left.
In fact, these two men were not thieves but private enterprise employees who were tasked with spying on Captain Louie so that they could give him bribes. James didn't know this but he had cleverly protected Captain Louie's safety and pride.
After this incident, James willingly acted as Captain Louie's protector. Whenever anyone came looking for Captain Louie, he would give them a hard time. He thought these people were trying to pull strings and send gifts to Captain Louie. Otherwise, why wouldn't they just go to his office?
One day, as James was repairing a car downstairs, he saw a very luxurious small car approaching. A middle-aged, fat man got out of the car with a bulging bag under his armpit. He looked around and surveyed the upstairs from time to time. James recognized him as Liu, the factory director who specialized in manufacturing poor quality fertilizer and had been seized by
Captain Louie a few days ago. James became angry when he thought of how counterfeit fertilizer pits farmers and wanted to teach Liu a lesson. The fat man approached him and asked, "Excuse me, do you know which floor Captain Louie
Louie lives on?"
James "hummed" when he heard this, thinking that the fat man must be trying to send gifts through bribes to Captain Louie to block his mouth and reduce his punishment, or end it altogether. He thought the bulging bag must be full of money, at least tens of thousands of yuan.
James shuddered when he thought of what might happen. He must protect Captain Louie and block this driver. So, he repeated what he had said before and told the fat man that Captain Louie had moved away.
James went upstairs to Captain Louie's apartment and knocked on the door. After a few moments, Captain Louie answered the door with a confused expression on his face.
"Captain, there was a man downstairs asking for your whereabouts," James said in a serious tone. "He had a bulging bag under his arm and seemed very suspicious."
Captain Louie's expression changed immediately. "Thank you, Dahai. You did the right thing by telling me. I will report this to my superiors and take appropriate action."
From that day on, James became even more protective of Captain Louie, making sure to block anyone he deemed suspicious or untrustworthy. He felt a sense of responsibility to keep his neighbor and friend safe, especially since he knew Captain Louie was working hard to crack down on illegal activities in the city.
One day, as James was closing up shop, he noticed a group of young men lingering nearby, eyeing the apartment building. They seemed to be discussing something among themselves, and James's instincts told him that they were up to no good.
Without hesitation, he approached them and asked, "Can I help you with something?"
The young men turned to face him, sizing him up. "We're just waiting for someone," one of them said.
"Who are you waiting for?" James pressed.
"None of your business," another one snapped.
James stood his ground, determined to protect his friend. "This is a residential area. If you don't have a legitimate reason to be here, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
The young men grumbled and muttered some curses under their breath, but they eventually scattered and left. James breathed a sigh of relief and went back to his stall, feeling proud of himself for standing up for what was right.
As time went on, James's reputation as a dependable and trustworthy person grew, and he became known as "Block the Driver" among his customers and neighbors. He never forgot his duty to protect those around him, and his warm heart and kind spirit continued to shine through in all that he did.
