5. September 2143, Thursday

Humming, Kim Hongjoong tapped the steering wheel of his old VW minibus as he tried to prepare himself mentally for the mission before him.

It was the middle of the night and the streets were quiet. Now and then, pedestrians walked along the sidewalk under the partially flickering streetlights, but no one seemed to pay any attention to the old VW minibus. This was because it had been spray-painted black by Hwang Hyunjin some time ago, making night-time excursions and missions a lot easier.

Occasionally, Hongjoong and his gang would break into KQ labs or other KQ-related buildings to obtain information about the chip's structure or similar. Sometimes they were lucky and got a lot of information during a break-in, but often they were unlucky and got almost nothing that could help them in any way to unravel District 9 and to disempower J.Y. Park. Especially in recent times, the yield was always very low. They tried to make the best out of the information they had, but it looked easier than it was.

Hongjoong, the captain of his group, had been free for seven years. The other members of his group, including Hwang Hyunjin, Song Mingi, Choi San and Yang Jeongin, had only escaped from District 9 about two years ago, Jung Wooyoung only a year so far.

It took some time for the six of them to find their feet in their freedom and get used to the new situations and dangers of the outside world. A shelter had to be found and set up, and of course the various roles had to be assigned to ensure good teamwork. It was only about six months ago that everyone had settled in and felt safe enough to start gathering information about the KQ chips. The goal was clear to everyone from the start: District 9 must be abolished.

"Can we listen to a different CD? The same songs have been playing up and down for the last few days," Wooyoung complained sulkily in the back row. "We're almost there and besides, we don't really have much choice of CDs," replied Hongjoong. "Can't we buy some new ones?" Wooyoung continued to sulk. "Excuse me? It's 2143, there are no CDs to buy and there are hardly any people left who own any. Just be glad that we found the few CDs in that old cabin in the woods," Hongjoong replied, focusing on the road again. "Ugh, but that doesn't mean we have to listen to Girls Generation - Gee a thousand times in a row. Dude, that song is from the last century, I think 2009 or so," he mumbled, which is why Hongjoong turned off the CD player without further ado.

"Before we start, does everyone still have their assigned task in mind? If not, now's the last chance to ask," the captain inquired as he parked a little away from the KQ lab building a few minutes later and looked back at his gang members. However, they all shook their heads in the negative, which is why Hongjoong continued: "Don't forget the masks and you two..." He pointed his finger sternly at pink-haired Mingi and red-haired Hyunjin, who were holding their black and white face masks in their hands to avoid being recognized by the cameras. Both troublemakers deliberately sat one row behind the captain so that he always had a good view of them.

"... you two please put on your beanies," Hongjoong continued, but Hyunjin shook his head in denial. "Forgot the beanies," he grinned, knowing that the two of them had deliberately not taken them along. They found it impractical to fight with beanies or similar on their heads, even though their striking hair color would make them instantly recognizable regardless of their masks.

"You've also got all that eye-catching Oreo hair yourself! And... and San is allowed to show off his Anna from Frozen hair? That's unfair, don't you think?" Mingi added his two cents. "What Anna, my hair is black and the little white part doesn't show on camera, not like your flashy clown hair!" protested San in the last row next to Wooyoung and leaned forward towards the culprits. "Clowns?!" Hyunjin cried overdramatically. "That's right! Or should everyone think that the Guerrillas have broken out of a circus?" San underlined his statement twice.
