"What do you mean, J.Y. Park is dead?" Hongjoong asked in astonishment, glancing expectantly at Jongho and Jeongin. They were all back in the bunker now, waiting in the living room with bated breath for an explanation.
"Apparently, he's dead. We overheard it by chance at the police station when we were sneaking into our target's office," Jongho began to explain. "Out in the hallway, they were discussing whether to announce it to the media or keep it a secret for a while longer." Jeongin picked up the thread, "Supposedly, they found his chip in the Han River. They suspect he drowned, but they haven't found the body yet. Now, they think we're behind it..."
"I don't believe it," Chan interjected skeptically. "This must be some elaborate plan by J.Y. Park himself. How else do you explain the sudden spike in missing civilians?" The two youngest members shrugged in response.
"I agree, but something about this doesn't sit right with me," Yeosang chimed in. "The chip?" Felix asked, to which Yeosang nodded. "Something feels off, but I can't quite put my finger on what."
"Didn't we assume J.Y. Park didn't have a chip?" Wooyoung added, a shiver running down his spine at the thought. "Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to conduct all those experiments on the deviants, right?"
"Before my chip burned out, I asked my uncle if he even had one," Seonghwa admitted, drawing everyone's attention. "He never answered, but thinking about it now, it would make sense if he didn't."
"Does he even have a scar on his neck?" Mingi wondered aloud. "I don't know," Seonghwa replied thoughtfully. "If we assume everyone has a chip, we wouldn't normally look for it. But he must have something similar that the KQ monitoring center tracks, especially since you often have to verify your ID when entering District 9."
"Then he probably has one, just without the emotion-suppression feature," Jisung suggested. "You're right. After all, J.Y. Park was involved in developing the chips. He must have known how to disable certain functions," Changbin agreed.
The room fell silent as they all pondered the situation, the complexity of it weighing heavily on their minds.
"But how could he have done that?" Jeongin asked, confused. "He could only shut down the chip if it was already implanted in him. The chip should have prevented him from doing such a thing."
"He probably planned the whole thing," Seonghwa mused, deep in thought. "He's capable of anything to achieve his goals and he plans everything down to the last detail. How he did it, though, I'm not sure." Silence fell again. No one had an answer. The tension in the air was palpable, almost suffocating, until suddenly Felix jumped up as if he'd been stung. "Wait!" he exclaimed before dashing out of the living room.
Confused, the others exchanged glances, assuming Felix was going to fetch something related to the chip. But when he returned with a plate of brownies, a few brows furrowed in surprise. Some, however, couldn't help but smirk. Chan reached out to grab one, but Felix quickly turned and set the plate on the table.
"I almost forgot them in the oven. They're still really hot, so don't eat them yet, or you'll burn your tongues!" Felix, their ray of sunshine, cheered the team up, briefly glancing at Chan, who sheepishly scratched the back of his head. The delicious aroma of brownies filled the room, lightening the mood considerably, even though the earlier question remained unanswered.
