We arrived at the Williams' family ranch after a long and tiring drive in the RV. It was already 7 PM, and the sun had set. The darkness of the night had engulfed the surroundings, and we could barely see where we were heading. As we drove, the gravel under the RV's wheels made a loud crunching sound that echoed in the stillness.
"Here we are! Finally!" Mik exclaimed as we pulled up to the ranch. I peered out the window and saw the silhouette of the house against the night sky.
"Looks like we made it just in time for dinner," Mik's mom said as she parked the RV. We all piled out, stretching our legs after the long drive.
We were greeted by Mik's twin cousins, Jen and Jess, and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, who had flown in from New York. "Welcome to the ranch, Olive!" Jen and Jess said in unison as they hugged me.
"Thanks, it's great to meet you all," I replied, smiling.
After unloading our bags, we settled in and got comfortable. The four of us shared a room, which was spacious enough to accommodate all our belongings. They spent the evening catching up and chatting about their lives since we last saw one another. I tried to join in on the conversations.
As we sat down for dinner, Mik's dad, Mr. Williams, introduced me to the Rogers family. "This is Olive, she's Mik's best friend," he said, gesturing towards me. "It's great to meet you all," I said, trying to hide my nerves.
We sat down for dinner, and I couldn't wait to dig into the delicious steak on my plate. Jake, Mik's older brother, sat beside me and kept making small talk, which was nice at first. But as the meal went on, he started to get a little too friendly, caressing my thigh and giving me lingering looks that made me feel uneasy.
I tried my best to keep the conversation light and casual, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that Jake was flirting with me. I didn't want to cause any drama or make things awkward.
Midway through dinner, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Excusing myself, I told everyone I needed to use the washroom and headed off to take the call in private. As I shut the door, I picked up the call and in my normal guy voice, asked my mother what had happened.
"Hey, sweetie, how are you doing?" my mother asked.
"I'm good, just having dinner with friends," I replied.
"Oh, okay, well, I just wanted to check in and see how you're doing. Call me back if you need anything," she said before ending the call.
I took a deep breath and composed myself before heading back to the dinner table.
After dinner, we went back to our room and decided to give each other makeovers. "I call doing your nails, Olive," Jess said, holding up a bottle of bright pink nail polish. "Sounds good to me," I replied, smiling.
As we did each other's nails, we chatted about boys and shared stories about our crushes. Eventually, the conversation drifted off, and we all fell asleep, exhausted from the long day of traveling.
