*STEVE'S POV*

I sat down on her small, black velvet couch, the softness bringing slight comfort to my hands as they brushed it. I looked up at her, her hair tied into a messy bun held by a black hair tie, and her clothes baggy, black sweatpants and a baggy dark blue top, her thick rimmed, black glasses were pushed up on the bridge of her nose as she set Jenna down on the floor next to her sister. She didn't look like she had left the house in days even though I just saw her at the tower less than an hour ago.

"What can I do for you? Other than missions, you know I don't do those anymore," she spoke as she handed me a cup of chamomile tea.

"The sugar and everything are already in there," she stated as I looked at the cup skeptically as she sipped her own.

"Why are you being so quiet?"

"Just taking everything in," I stated as I looked around the apartment.

"I haven't seen you since the day I moved out, and now you randomly show up so I know you want something," she said with a heavy sigh as she grabbed the twins, going to lay them in their cribs before coming back out to talk.

"You really don't remember," I questioned as she looked at me questioningly.

"Remember what," she asked as I sighed to myself.

"You came to the tower earlier today," I explained as she shook her head.

"No, I've been here all day, I only woke up about an hour ago," she said as I looked at the floor.

"Jess, you came to the tower and gave us a location for Loki's staff."

" I don't even know where it is Steve, " she spoke, shaking her head as she took another sip of her tea.

"Look," I said as I pulled out a small tablet that was connected to the tower's security system. I handed it to her, carefully watching her movements as her eyes followed the security footage.

"Sure as hell looks like me...but I don't remember any of that," she spoke softly as her brows furrowed, watching the movements of the girl on the screen.

"There!" She pointed at the screen as it paused, zooming in on her arms.

"If that is me. Why are my veins black," she asked as I looked closely, seeing the veins on her neck dark as night.

"I-I'm not even sure," I stated bluntly as I looked at the picture closer before looking back up at Jess.

"Steve after everything I've been through don't you think I would remember leaving my two children home alone? I'm not irresponsible," she seemed almost irritated by my questioning now. I knew Jess wouldn't lie to me but if she wasn't lying then who was the girl we saw?

"I'm not even sure anymore Jess. Honestly nothing has been the same since you left the tower..since you left me."

"I didn't want to leave. I had to Steve I..I was a danger to all of you."

"So having the twins makes them safer with you than with us?" I asked as her brows furrowed and I could see her eyes glossing over with tears.

"Leave." She said sternly as I realized what I said, and shook my head. I discreetly pressed a button on my watch that sent a location to the Tower's database.

"No Jess, not again." I responded with the same tone as I saw her hands starting to glow, her skin starting to change to that royal blue as the twins began crying from their room.

"You need to go, I thought I knew the man you were but I guess I was wrong," she said as she stood up from her spot and began walking to the door, seeming to have her powers under control for the moment.

"Jess I'm not leaving," I said sternly as I now stood up and she stopped in her tracks. She tilted her head to the left almost like a curious dog as she quickly turned around, running toward me as the door blew in.

"Jess!" I screamed as I saw her knocked out on the floor, her glasses to the side and broken as I looked around. There was smoke and dust from the explosion, but all I could make out was her figure and then she was gone.

"Rogers what happened here?" Tony asked worriedly as he walked in through the open wall where the door used to be.

"Jess she-"

"Wait, where is she?" Tony asked as he looked around worriedly, the twins still crying as my heart began to beat faster.

"Get the twins and take them somewhere safe," I told him as I climbed out her open window and up the fire exit stairs to see if I could see any sign of her.

"Jess!" I yelled as I looked around, worry overtaking me as my mind only said one thing before I said it out loud.

"I can't lose her again."
