Oswaldo's P.O.V
"Would you like to hold her?"
That was the question of the century. Would I like to hold her? I could honestly say that I didn't know. A big part of me felt like I was betraying Melody, because I was honest to god excited that my daughter had finally opened her eyes. And because of that excitement I felt like I was betraying her mother.
The nurse looked at me expectantly, and I nodded nervously.
"Alright then, why don't you take a seat in the chair and I'll bring her over to you."
I followed her instructions and took a seat in one of the rocking in the hospital's nursery. I was nervous and scared. You might be thinking, 'dude, why are you scared? You're a man, don't be a wuss.' But until you're in my situation then you can judge.
The nurse brought her over to me and placed her carefully in my arms. The amount of love I felt at the precise moment was unbelievable.
"Support her head with your arm. That's it; you're doing great."
After a few uncomfortable moments, I finally got the hang of it. I couldn't believe how beautiful she was. She looked so much like Melody that I wanted to cry. I rocked her back and forth, and she just stared up at me, with those perfect little eyes of hers.
"She has the most beautiful green eyes that I've even seen." The nurse said.
"They're not green they're jade and yes she does."
The nurse smiled and nodded her head. She then excused herself to give me some privacy with my daughter.
I ran my finger down her cheeks, and she captured it between her tiny fingers. I laughed.
"You're a strong one, aren't you?"
She just looked at me, like she was studying me.
"You know, your mommy is going to freak out when she wakes up and see you. I bet you'd like to see her, but she's sleeping. You see, Mommy is very tired, so she having a long rest, so that when she wakes she'll be strong enough to take care of you."
Megan started making sounds like she was about to cry, and I felt like I was about to join her. I missed Melody so much, I wish she'd wake up and see what a beautiful baby we've made. But she wasn't showing any signs of waking up anytime soon. It's been 42 weeks, three days, seven hours, seven minutes and eighteen seconds and still nothing.
I continued talking to Megan, telling her about her mother and she just continued looking at me. The door opened, and I thought it was the nurse coming back, but when I looked up I saw a blonde hair girl about my age looking at me.
"Sorry," she said, "I didn't know anyone was in here."
"It's ok," I replied, "You can come in if you want to."
She looked unsure for a moment, but she came into the room and closed the door. She stayed standing at the door looking at me. I wondered why she was just standing there, so I asked.
"Which one is yours?"
Her eyes widened, then she smiled embarrassedly.
"Oh no, I don't have a baby. That little guy over there,"
She gestured to the baby in the cot next to Megan's. "He's my nephew. I come here whenever I get the chance, to spend some time with him."
I returned her smile. "That's really sweet of you."
She edged closer to the cot and said playfully, "Yep, I'm generally a sweet person."
I laughed and watched as she took the baby out of the cot. The way she did it I could tell that she's been doing it for a while. She walked over and took the seat opposite me. She held the baby up for me to see.
"This handsome little man here is Isaac and I'm Isabelle."
The baby was quite beautiful, with a headful of blonde hair just like his aunt.
"Nice to meet you both. I'm Oswaldo and this little beauty in my arms is my daughter, Megan."
I saw her eyes raised in question, but she didn't say anything, at least not for a while. We both sat there quietly, holding the babies. Every now and again, I saw her glance my away. I could tell that she was burning to ask me a question. When it looked like she was going to burst with the need, she blurted out.
"Ok, I gotta ask. How old are you?"
I started chuckling because I found it cute.
"Wow, that took you long enough. You looked like you were about to explode."
I continued laughing, and when I looked at her I saw that she was looking at me like she wanted to hit me. That made me laugh even more. It felt good to laugh, I haven't done it in a while. The last time I laughed like I really meant it was that night at Big Ray's.
"Ha, ha, you're funny, but seriously I just gotta know, how old are you?"
I stopped laughing and smiled at her. "I'm nineteen."
She gasped, "Ohmygod! So am I!"
I laughed again at her excitement. "Well, how'd you like that, we've got something in common."
She got up and put her nephew down, then came to sit back down next to me.
"So, if you don't mind me asking, how'd you get a kid?"
I smirked at her, and her cheeks flamed up.
"Ohmygod! I know how you got the kid, I just meant what did you do to get the kid?"
I started laughing, and she was just getting redder.
"I didn't mean that the way it sounded. I'm so, embarrassing myself right now; maybe I should just shut up. Ugh! Me and my big mouth, I can never seem to stay quiet."
I was laughing so hard; tears were in my eyes. Isabelle, on the other hand, did not look so amused.
"Laugh it all up, just laugh if up. I hope you have a good laugh at my expense."
I tried my best to sober up. But I could also see a small smile playing on her lips. Megan made a sound and I looked down and saw that she was sleeping. I brushed some of her dark curls out of her face and kissed her forehead.
Getting up I walked over to the cot, but when I got there I wasn't sure how to put her in. Isabelle saw me standing there and came over, offering to help.
"Let me show you how it's done."
I nodded, and she took Megan from me. Carefully she placed her on her back and turned her head to the side. She then tucked the blanket securely around her. I stood back and watched and I felt a pang in my heart. Melody should be here.
"My girlfriend is in a coma, has been for over nine months. She doesn't even know she has a daughter."
I don't know why I told her any of that, but I just felt like I needed to say it. I continued talking, telling her everything, from how Melody and I met up until that night at Big Ray's. And all she did was listen.
"I'm so sorry, that's the worst possible thing that could happen to anyone. I'm sorry you had to go through that and is still going through it."
Her kind words meant a lot.
"Thank you."
I turned to move away and so did she. We bumped into each other and I put my arms around her waist to stop her from falling. She gasped, looking at me wide eyed, then blush. I dropped my hand from her waist and took a step back. I didn't want her getting the wrong idea, there was only one girl that my hearts beats for. And I was willing to wait forever for her to open her eyes and come back to me.
