I feel like I’m missing something. Eve’s eyes keep flitting to Max’s. Max alternates between lusty, promising looks at Eve and death glares at Luka. When we first gathered at the kitchen island with coffee’s in hand, Eve had gone to sit, then shot out of her seat like a rocket, making Max laugh. She’s now standing with her elbows leaning on the island. The angle is perfect for me to yank down her pants and thrust-
“- take this side road Mikyda.” Luka says, pointing to the map. I wrench my eyes away from my mate and make myself focus. I can’t make mistakes that could endanger her or the others. But when we get home, I am definitely sneaking her away. I pay attention as Luka goes over my role, thankfully not letting on to anyone that I hadn’t been listening and instead acting like he was clarifying, I owe him one. We call up the teams we are leading and gear up. I hate that I will again not be on Eve’s team. Garret is slamming and banging stuff around, clearly pissed that he too is going to be away from her. Carino and Dev are going with her this time.
I watch Lysario march over and turn her, braiding her long hair and then wrapping it into a bun. I nod in approval. Less chance of the enemy grabbing her by her hair. We kiss and hug Eve before heading over to our waiting teams.
I quickly go over our roles with my team, making sure we all know what we are doing, while I taste their emotions for deceit or fear. Thankfully, my team is ready and raring to go. We are also the team that will be stationed closest to Eve’s. The portals fire into existence and we walk through our own and take up our position. My eyes dart down the road to where I know Eve is. I hope there are no kids this round, for Eve’s sake.
The first truck is sighted nearly an hour later. I tense, waiting for Eve’s signal. Vines shoot out of the ground and drag the lead truck to a halt. As the second truck closes in on my team's position I shove my own vines into the ground and through the earth. They shoot out underneath the truck and pull it to a stop, while others tear wires, tubes, and leads out, disabling it. The driver jumps out confused and kicks his tire. The trucks behind our target slow down and stop.
My vines shoot out from under the truck and wrap around the driver's limbs, thorns digging in, as my vines pull him in opposite directions. His body makes wet, tearing noises while he screams before he falls apart in a tumble of limbs. Beautiful! I hear Carino and Dev tearing apart their target and I feel Eve’s foul mood as they deprive her of her kill. Further down the convoy, I hear screams and glass breaking as the teams drag the drivers from their trucks and end their lives fast but painfully.
I head to the back of our truck and wonder if it will contain just humans or some of our races. The convoy we intercepted last had been a mixed bag, and the humans were sent back to their towns. Those of supe descent were offered places with us if they wanted, and some offered our people safety with them back in the human world. The ones of age had chosen to stay.
I unlock and pull the doors open to reveal terrified dirty faces. The scent of their unwashed bodies makes my nose wrinkle. I sense a few non-humans in the mix.
“Your safe now,” I reassure them. “The drivers are dead, we are going to get you to wherever you want to go.” Those not human, look at me with hope. The humans however remain terrified. Humans always pick up on our difference. It triggers their prey response. Something in their heads warning them they are not on equal footing with us and certainly not at the top of the food chain. I hunch myself a little and try to look less scary, but I doubt it makes much difference, judging by their faces. I back away and let the female Lycan in our team coax them out.
I glance down the road and see Eve successfully coax her lot out. I chuckle. Humans are idiots. She may look little and harmless, but she is the biggest predator of us all.
I sense the disturbance in the ground just before the ground falls into circles that appear in front of us and claws scrabble at the edges for purchase. I bark at the Light Fae to open the portal as I unsheathe my sword. Adrenalin pumps through my blood and blood lust sings through my body. A grin stretches across my face. Playtime! I launch myself at the nearest circle, decapitating the Demon as it pulls itself up to stand, having made it to the surface. His head flies off to my right and I kick him in the gut, sending him back into the hole that had yet to refill.
“This is Sparta!” I roar as I kick and watch his body disappear into the depths of the earth. I hear Eve crack up laughing. I glance over and see her taking off the head of another Demon, as her team races their rescues through a portal and back to the pack. She shoots me the thumbs up, still laughing.
“Fucking epic! Why didn’t I think of that!” She crows, swinging her sword at another Demon. I preen. Eve thinks I’m epic. I duck as a whoosh of air comes from behind me, narrowly missing the claws that are slashing at me. Eve tuts at me, as she wades through the Demons racing to attack her. Dev and Carino fighting beside her. Guess I just lost epic status. I hear Eve repeating something as she takes down each Demon and I strain my ears as I fight through the Demons converging on us. My jaw drops as I realize she’s apologizing to them.
It reminds me that they are fighting against their will. I momentarily stall. Claws slash my face, jumpstarting me back into gear. At the end of the day, it is us or them and I definitely choose us. I resume my rampage as I keep the Demons away from those racing for the portal.
“Clear!” The Light Fae yell, letting me know our group of rescues are through and safe on pack lands. I retreat backward as I fight, grabbing the Fae and pulling him with me, as we stumble through the portal and sever it before the Demons can follow. The waiting medic team is already assessing the people from the trucks. I am relieved to see the other teams closing their portals off and grinning. Eve’s teams portal is still open. I stride towards it and shove my head through. I grab the three human morons rebelling against going through who are holding up what is left of the line and yank them through. I don’t care how scared they are, they were putting my mate and circle members at risk. With them out of the way, the rest of the truck members willingly rush through. The team soon follows. Carino and Dev drag Eve behind them, but the Fae doesn't follow. The portal remains open.
“Fuck!” Eve swears, shaking free of the guys and marching back towards it. I yank her out of the way just as the Demons rush through in a torrent. The fucking Light Fae should have shut it down as soon as they were compromised. If they survive whatever is going on over the other side of the portal, they certainly won’t survive me when I get my hands on them. Only the owner of the portal can close it. I wave my own into existence and reappear back by the second truck. The Fae is restrained in iron shackles, knife to his neck. Pussy! He has placed the value of his life above those being attacked on the other side. I send my vines through the earth and shove them up through his feet, traveling up and through his body till I reach his head. I build them up to branch out and expand, till the pressure explodes his body outwards and he pops like a tick. It is over in seconds. It's a shame I much prefer to do that slowly and savor my kills. The vampires who had restrained him gape through the blood dripping down their faces. The Fae’s portal winks out of existence as he dies. I grunt with satisfaction, stepping back into mine and shutting it firmly behind me.
My feet land on our home turf and I unsheathe my sword. Jesus, it has all gone to hell in the mere minute I was gone. I let out a roar and throw myself into the fray.
