Crystal tapped her hand against her lap as she eagerly waited for her new boss to come into her office and greet her. It's only been her first month here in Chicago and she's already worried about not doing well. That's normal though, after being fired from a job for know reason that you can possibly see. Especially when you were a loyal doctor like Crystal was. She was at Los Angeles Hospital for ten going on eleven years before her boss gave her the boot; And then had the audacity to replace her with a white man. The nerve of some people.

But Chicago, is going to be different for Crystal. She had her whole life planned out and it's not going to stop just because she's not in California anymore. Ever since Crystal was in the third grade, she had a big dream to become a doctor, then when she got older and learned that she could be promoted to a senior doctor or even be a Chief of Surgery, she never stopped dreaming. People used to always tell her the sky is the limit. But, there's no limit for Crystal. There never has been one. She thought about quitting the business of being a doctor while in college because it was "too much work" but she realized that her parents would've killed her if she would've wasted all our their hard earned money. Not only that but she wants to make her grandmother proud. Her grandmother was one of the first black, female surgeons in Memphis, Tennessee during the 70s. It was hard for a black woman to get any job, but to be a surgeon, that took patience for Crystal's grandmother. Luckily, she inherited that quality from her mom's side of the family because she was anything like her dad she would've knocked any and everyone out of her path just to get to the top. Sometimes you gotta be like that if you wanna win. Her dad taught her that lesson at a young age.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

"Sorry I'm late. I just got out of surgery." Dr. Lynn Whitfield said walking into her own office. "Crystal Hayslett, it is so nice to meet you!" She said with opened arms.

"Thank you so much." Crystal said hugging her.

Dr. Whitfield sat down at her desk and looked at Crystal. She saw a lot of younger self in Crystal, which is part of the reason that she hired her. But nobody needs to know that.

"I think that you're going to be great here. I mean your resume is amazing!" Lynn praised Crystal.

She smiled proudly and nodded her head. "Thank you. That means a lot to me." Crystal said to her new boss.

Lynn tapped the Apple Watch on her wrist and looked at the time.

"Some of your colleagues on their break. Let's go, I'll introduce you to them. Feel free to hang around and watch today. You don't start until tomorrow-"

"The best way to learn is by watching." Crystal said as her and Lynn both stood up.

Lynn led Crystal to the door and opened it for her new doctor.
