I was sitting in the hut I had built in the top of my apartment building roof when SuperM arrived. "What the heck do you have on the roof?" Taeyong asked as they came in.
"That's called schach," I told him. "This holiday is to remind us of the clouds of glory that God used to protect us when He took us in the desert for forty years after we were redeemedvfrom Egypt. This hut is called a Sukkah. The 'roof' has to be made of something that grew from the ground and thin enough that you can see the stars. There are two days of holiday followed by five intermediate days and then two days of a completely different holiday which I will explain later."
"So what do we do here?" Taemin asked.
"Essentially, we live here for a week. We eat, sleep, and spend time here."
"But why? It's cold out," Ten remarked.
"That's exactly why we do it now. To show that we are doing it because God commanded us and not because it is easy. A lot of people put in heaters so it's more comfortable."
We sat around the table and ate the meal. The two main days of holiday past quickly and it was the intermediate days. As per a usual Jewish family, each day I brought them on a different trip. One day we went to Everland, one day we went to the zoo, and so on.
Soon it was the last 2 days. We moved back into the house for these last 2 days.
"The first of the two days is called Shemini Atzeret and it just to thank God for the upcoming harvest in the land of Israel. It's like every holiday that we have and that we have a meal in the night and one in the day. The second day is called Simchat Torah and we celebrate God giving us the Torah. We go to synagogue and sing and dance with the Torahs."
"That's so much fun!" Mark yelled. "I'm so excited!"
"Quieter Mark," Baekhyun shushed him, "but yes, I'm excited too."
"I can't believe it's already been a full year since we met," Kai mused.
"Yeah, and this is already the last holiday," Ten added.
"I loved ever second of it," Lucas remarked. "It's not over yet," I said. "Let's enjoy these last two days." They all nodded.
The first day past uneventfully and we were headed to the synagogue. We all danced around the whole day with a break in the middle for lunch and pretty soon the day was over.
"You guys are welcome to come over whenever you want to," I told them as they headed out the door. "There are so many more things I can share with you about Judaism."
A/N this is the last of the Jewish holiday series. Tomorrow night is sukkot but I am uploading it a day early because I will be super busy tomorrow with work and getting ready for sukkot. I hope everyone enjoyed this series!!!
