I placed the two cheesecakes down on the counter. I looked around the kitchen. I had the cheese blintzes in the fridge and the ice cream in the freezer. I had made some other foods as well and I was ready for Shavuot.
A knock came at the door. "Come in," I called out. "It smells good in here," Baekhyun said, sticking his head into the kitchen. "It does," Taemin agreed. I motioned them to sit at the table in the living room.
I came out of the kitchen and lit the candles before sitting down. "I'm sure you guys are familiar with the bible?" They nodded. "The bible is an adaptation of the Five Books of Moses, the Jewish Bible, which is called the Torah. This holiday commemorates the receiving of the Torah. On this day all those years ago, God gave the Jews the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is a custom to eat dairy foods, although for every other holiday we eat meat or chicken, because the night we received the Torah, we had no kosher utensils so we could not cook or eat anything meat. We had to eat dairy back then and that is why we eat dairy now."
They all nodded and looked around the table. It was set with a white tablecloth and a vase of fresh flowers in the middle. There were strategically placed flowers around the room.
"Why are there so many flowers?" Ten asked.
"I'll tell you in a minute but first I'm going to bring out the food." I went back into the kitchen, Taeyong and Lucas followed after me to help me. Once everything was on the table I started talking again.
"The flowers are because Mount Sinai was in the desert. In the desert, flowers don't grow. God made a miracle that the day the Jews received the Torah, Mount Sinai bloomed with flowers over the whole mountain."
"You pay attention to the smallest details," Kai said. "I never would have thought of that." I just laughed.
"Dig in," I said and we all started eating. The cheese blintzes were gone in an instant and the beurekas not long after. Everyone ate to their heart's content and then I brought out the dessert, cheesecake and ice cream. These were soon gone too and everyone was happy. I was happy spending time with them and teaching them about my religion. They seemed to be enjoying it and I definitely was.
The night passed quickly as did the day. They spent the entire forty eight hour holiday with me. When they left at the end in high spirits, I promised them that I would get ready for the next holiday and I would not forget to invite them. I went to bed that night content, thinking up what I should do for Rosh Hashana.
A/N Shavuot starts tonight for the next two days. I hope everyone who is celebrating enjoys.
